Canvas: Turn Image or Object into the Canvas

I would like to be able to transform an object into the canvas since being able to do so would allow a user to use the eraser tool to erase sections of flattened areas to expose desired areas of the canvas.

For instance, a user wants to show three specific areas of an image, while hiding the majority of the same image. Such functionality would allow the user to:
  1. Open the desired image in Snagit, then
  2. convert the image into the canvas, then
  3. cover the entire image with a rectangle shape, then
  4. flatten the rectangular shape, then
  5. select the eraser tool, then
  6. apply the eraser over the areas that she wants to be exposed.

In the above example, the rectangular shape acts as a "mask" that covers the image/canvas. The eraser tool then acts like a "subtraction" tool that "punches holes/windows" into the "mask."

Snagit doesn't do masking. For that sort of thing you need to take it to a Photo program that has layers and where you can do a whole lot more post processing that you can in snagit editor which is more for markups. It does a lot of things that stretch the meaning of "markups" and does them well but some things are better handled in a photo or vector program

Hi Rick. Thank you for your response. I appreciate your time and insight. However, all I’m suggesting is a simple enhancement to an already-existing feature. Why knock a suggestion for improvement?

It seems to be a simple enhancement that would bring even more functionality to an already excellent and robust “markup editor.”

The programmers see value in having a canvas and being able to make the canvas invisible, or coloured - and the single purpose of the eraser is to make the canvas visible (so in a way, Snagit does work with masking/layers). I see nothing but value to adding the ability to turn an object into the canvas.
