Capture window should be pinnable

Prior to Snagit 12, the Capture window was a normal window -- you could open it up, leave it on your desktop with all the controls visible and accessible.

In Snagit 12, it has morphed into a "magic" window that only appears when you hover over it.  Also, it likes to hide away on the top of the screen.

This behavior is, presumably, convenient for some people who like to not see Snagit most of the time and get in the habit of unintuitively moving their mouse to a magic location on the top of the screen to display the application.

For me, it is a major annoyance.  First, I hate having to chase after the window and leave my mouse over it to keep it visible.  If I'm capturing a bunch of different items in a row, it is (was) very handy to keep the Capture window open like a control panel and just go directly to it and click.  Now I have to move the "magic" spot, wait a second, move the mouse again to select a function, then (because of the reduced UI) click again to get to something that I used to be able to go directly to.

Second, I have a lot of things at the top of my screen.  Snagit often gets in the way, and its "appear-on-hover" behavior becomes all the more annoying when it blocks me from the browser tab or whatever else is there that I'm actually trying to access.

All that's needed to fix this is the ability to pin the capture window so it stops trying to outsmart me with its disappearing act.  Believe me, I know what I want much better than it does.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for this feedback on the Capture Window staying visible. I will make sure the product team gets this viewpoint!

One thing that might help you, is the use of Hotkeys. Have you set any of these up? This would prevent you from having to hover and click each time you wanted to capture; you could just press your hotkey(s) to initiate the capture, and can even assign different hotkeys to different capture settings. Here is a tutorial to get you started:

I hope this helps! Thanks again for your feedback and let me know if you need anything else.

Hotkeys, saved profiles, etc. are great if you only use SnagIt in 2 or 3 different ways.  And I have done that for the 3 most common capture setups I use.  If you're doing more than that, trying to setup and remember, say, 12 different hotkeys doesn't make much sense.

I like to be able to take advantage of all the flexibility SnagIt provides for custom captures as the situation requires.  For example, timed captures, extended windows, custom scroll regions (especially with all the problems capturing scrolling Chrome windows), different same options, etc.

If I just wanted hotkey screen captures, I wouldn't have bothered with SnagIt in the first place.  The system PrintScreen button works pretty well.

Any updates on this?  I bought Snag IT 12, but would roll back in a heartbeat if I could.  I'm not patient enough to wait 4 seconds to slowly hover over tiny little thin bar...

You can download and activate an older version of SnagIt using a SnagIt 12 key.

You can also have more than one version of SnagIt installed on the same computer. You can only have one version open at any given time. You must close the open version of SnagIt in order to open another version first.

You can download and install a new or an older version from this link.
