Changing aspect ratio of canvas

Using Camtasia 2019 for Windows.

I have videos that were recorded in 16:9 widescreen format.  I need to be able to use (embed) them in 4:3.

This will require cropping, zooming, etc.  But I can't seem to change the canvas size and make it stick.  Any change in the preferences, even to a custom 4:3 ratio, still leaves my canvas the same size.

Attempting to change the shape of the window using the shift key (as recommended in another question) has no impact.

Is there some step I am missing in trying to change my preferences so my work space actually changes aspect ratio?

I would recommend you right click on the canvas region and select "project settings". A menu will open and from the Canvas Dimensions dropdown, select custom. Then input your desired size.

If you want every new project to open to a standard definition size, you need to go to Edit > Preferences > Project tab. Then select custom and enter your dimensions.

Looks like I was trying to change my default settings, which I'm guessing would impact the NEXT project, but wasn't actually changing the settings for THIS project.  Looks like I've got it now.

Thank you.

Camtasia also auto-adjusts the size of your project to the dimensions to the first media object you drop on your timeline. I'm not sure if there's a way to turn off this functionality.

I have a lot of dummy/placeholdler objects in my library for certain projects that require custom dimensions. These objects are exactly the size i need and I usually drop one on my timeline on a new project so it not only resizes correctly but then doesn't change once I import the first file.

I set my default setting to " Original Recording Dimensions" That locks in the setting.
I've been doing it so long, they may have made it a default for new projects? I would never know.

If you chose a default size in preferences, that will become the default. Killing auto-size.

Same here--I honestly never thought to change the dimensions via edit>preferences haha

I just left it set to "Original Recording Dimensions" when I upgraded to C19. It wasn't very intuitive because when you right click on the canvas and change the project settings for a brand new project, it says it's 1920x1080. However, as soon as you drop something on your timeline, it changes to the new size.

Not like any of this has every been remotely a problem haha but they probably could make it a little clearer.
