Choppy Previews

When I'm producing a video, and I want to take a look at a part by using the preview pane, it's really choppy and makes it very hard to edit. Any Suggestions?

Hello Graham,

I'm going to assume you are referring to Camtasia Studio, and will tag the post as such. I'm wondering if you are using version 8 that recently came out? The performance is much improved.

In any case, this is a hardware performance issue. My guess is that you have a lot of high motion content and perhaps a video with very large dimensions? The preview window is struggling because it's trying to play back the video in real time, and dropping frames because it can't keep up.

One trick that will show you exactly what you have without having to render the full video is called "Produce selection as". To try this, select the portion of the timeline you wish to review. Right-click the selected area, then click Produce selection as.

This is also a great way to tweak the quality settings and optimize the quality vs. file size you might be looking for without having to render the whole video.

Yes, I am using Camtasia Studio 8, and yes there is alot of high motion content and the dimensions are 1920 by 1080 so yeah it's pretty large dimensions aswell. Although I can't quite find the produce selection as button. When I right click it, it doesn't come up in the box.

sometimes you have to right click a 2nd time [be patient here] before the correct context menu will show; then select "produce selection as"

Nevermind found it, thanks for the tip! I think the reason was because the file was so large (I used fraps to record it) that it made it lag. But when i convert it with this it makes it lots better. Thanks alot!

Hi there,

I am having a similar problem with choppy videos in the preview screen. I am using videos I created with my phone, and I have tried producing each of them which works but I would really like to be able to edit them- which I cannot do when watching the rendered version.

How can I reduce the bitrate/quality so they play smoothly?

I'm having the same issue and TechSmith's customer service / tech support is completely unhelpful. I'm amazed that they're ignoring this because it's such a well-documented issue.Has anyone gotten any help from TechSmith with this issue?

I am also experiencing this on a PC that has an overclocked i7 processor (4.5Ghz) and a GTX 960 GPU. If those specs aren't sufficient... I'm not sure what ought to be. Is there a way to reduce the preview pane quality?

I have a question for you all. When you say the Preview Window is that the one that comes up after you click the stop button on the Recorder ? If so, I have not experienced this problem or issue unfortunately so that does not help you at all. If inside this Preview Window then I am sorry to say that as far as I know there is no way to change the quality or size.

How long are the videos you are recording as sometimes that can make a difference from what I have experienced as with longer videos it takes up more resources.

Or is it the detachable Preview Window when you are viewing the video on the Timeline ?

I would also suggest contacting the TechSmith Support Dept. again if you have not done so as of yet. They would be able to take a look at your project(s) and see if they can help with it. I have provided the information below:

The preview window is very slow, lagging, choppy, to the point where it is impossible to see what you are actually editing. The "Produce selection as" option does not come up on a right click for me after repeated attempts. I'm on Windows 8 running an i7 processor with 8GB of RAM. I've closed all other programs but Camtasia still locks up in the preview window.

Any ideas?

Try disabling GPU acceleration. For some people it works quite well.
