Closed Captions Position on Screen has changed in 2019 Version

A change in the 2019 version of Camtasia was to lower the Closed Caption position in the screen to place it right near the bottom for non ADA Compliant text. We used 20 point Ariel and this now is not as easy reading for students and interferes with other subject titles we wish to have down lower. A large number of our lessons are now affected and Techs can given no explanation as to why this was done. Surely if it was that easy to change for no apparent reason it can be changed back or more control given to users the Closed Captions position. Pleased with the product apart from that and we are committed to it. I would really like to see this issue addressed however.

one crude workaround ...

if captions are all 1 line, at end of line add 2 blank lines [shift-enter]; this moves the caption line up and gives a 3 line caption panel with the 1st line at top

minimize captions background color

do you have to use closed captions?

if not, use text callouts to hold captions text; place them wherever

+1 for this. The inability for the users to be able to move the closed captions within the smart player is very limiting.

@kayakman, I can't answer for the OP, but this is way too crude and way too much work to retro apply to all videos.

What version was being used before? Where things looked okay?

It was  definitely OK April 2019 - the change occurred around 2 updates ago.  Thanks for the suggestion's guys, but any work around retrofit is going to take days of work for us with the number of lessons involved. I'm hanging out hoping Camtasia can get it sorted! Rgds Martin

I believe it's all tied into the Smart Player. And if memory serves, they are able to update the Smart Player kind of "on the fly". And it updates immediately. So hopefully they can resolve it easily as well as quickly.

The space of the captions from the bottom was changed in the recent smart-player update.

It was changed from 58px to 10px. Why ???

Old version

latest version (5.51.1 as of this post)

I can understand why Techsmith wants to auto updates the player but I personally don't
like like when a company doesn't give me a choice to update or not.

I am doing many more vids with captions and have blocked Techsmith from updating the player files.
I have modified the player files for the captions to be located where I want them and how I want
them to look.
I prefer to just download and update player files myself when I want to update them.

Note that modifing the player file is NOT supported by Techsmith and changes you make are on YOU.

I personally have had no issue with the few changes I make and my captions are the way I need them.

I find it ridiculous that you know exactly what occurred.
Yet apparently tech Support does not offer a solution?

On closer reading of the initial posting. That's the impression I've gotten.

Well I don't think that they would offer the solution to edit the files.
I'm sure they don't want people mucking around in those files understandably
but they should know that there was a change and tell people that and why it was done.

I find myself drifting away more and more from Camtasia because of the lack of options
like ones for captions and audio. Great recorder but a sad and limited editor

Dubie

thanks for sharing the captions position tip

you're changing the value in the techsmith-smart-player.min.css ??

I just did a quick test and edited the value in the CSS, up to 300px; so far works great; but I need to do more testing

I too usually edit the values in the CSS to get a better acting and better looking player; I usually lighten the scrubber bar's background [default is way too dark], among other changes

I keep an edited copy of the CSS handy and after a production, just hot-swap in  the edited CSS file

Correct. I am editing the CSS file. I too keep edited and original files.

I also in some cases (for captions) edit the config_xml.js file in the scripts folder.

When I will be doing a run of videos that need the same look I will edit the files in the program so when i render the vids the work is done.

I keep edited files on hand (backed up) so if I need to change the look or function of a older video I can just do a swap out.

Hi all!

Thanks for bringing this up here; I'm going to be reaching out internally for some clarification on this topic and once I hear back more I'll update this post.

Thanks!

The reason that the caption jumps back to the bottom in Kayakman's video when you bring up the controls is because they added a transition effect to the captions.

It was done I am assuming because with the captions set at the default setting (10px) when you hover and the controls are brought in to view the captions now jump to above the controls.

In older versions the controls covered the captions.

If you do make a edit to the smart-player file(s) the max settiing of 58px will put the captions up higher (above the controls) but also will not "jump" when the controls come in to view.

To move the caption location (not the bottom spacing) up to the top, bottom, left or right is better done in the config_xml.js file in my opinion.

also, I appreciate the tip re V position via the config.js; just tried "top" [replacing default "bottom"] and the captions displayed along the top of video; too bad that option is not offered in the captions IU controls

Hello mjbutler,

I just want to understand the problem you are running into with how we have updated caption display in the TechSmith Smart Player.  It sounds like you designed your video content around the size and position of how we used to display captions?  If you need this to be true going forward then I would recommend choosing to burn-in your captions to the video itself when rendering.  If that isn't an option then I would highly recommend against designing any of your video content around the UI that Smart Player generates above the video.  The Smart Player can change at any time as you have seen with what we did with captions.

We changed captions to work how other popular video players display captions.  YouTube, Vimeo and Wistia all move the captions lower when controls are hidden.  From our point of view this is what customers have come to expect from video players on the web.

Personally (and this is a slightly different view to the OP), what people now "expect" is the ability to move the Closed Captions wherever they like, thus allowing content creators an ability to simply create content, and users that require CC to be able to view that content AND closed captions without them interfering with each other.

I might even go one stage further and say that what content creators are now "expect", is that Closed Captions are transcribed from the video, thus created automatically.  OK, off topic, but you get the gist I'm sure :)

Lastly, what we all "expect" is that CC are preferred to burned in captions, which is a bit 1990's

I think the points being made are clear. For Camtasia to be a platform for learning based material ( that we are using it for) it needs to provide a consistent product.  Customers are making a huge commitment to Camtasia when it is selected for a leaning platform and the time involved in program development is huge.

What does " then I would highly recommend against designing any of your video content around the UI that Smart Player generates above the video" actually mean?

I agree with previous comments that we need to have more control over the Closed Caption function. Burnt in Captions are not the look we want, but could be an option if we could have the ability to adjust the font size and screen height position?   Or - how about a downgrade option so we can convert our programs back to Camtasia 2018 :-)
