Crop a portion in the middle of the video

I know I can crop out the edges of the videos and I have seen Rick's suggestion to combine two or four videos with opposing cropped and then joined.  It would be nice if I could select a vertical (or horizontal) strip in the middle of the video and remove it automatically.
Thanks

I get the workaround.  It would be good if we could do this at once, or at least stitch the two images together afterwards.  The issue is that after doing this process, we end up with two videos to do all the rest of the editing.  Although I must say that your idea of control copy and paste is better than what I had originally thought.  My initial thoughts were to insert the video twice and then work on the copies.
Following your idea, perhaps I can do all the changes (speed up, etc.) and at the end copy and past the video and crop the portions that I want.

Thanks a lot.
