Crop part of screencast in Camtasia 8.6

I'm a Camtasia beginner, using version 8.6.  I've recorded a 7.5 minute screencast.  Part is PowerPoint slides, and part is live demo of an application.  I want to crop out parts of the screen on the live demo portions, but not the PowerPoint parts.  I tried cropping just between markers on the timeline, but that didn't seem to work -- it cropped the entire screencast.  So I tried cutting and pasting the parts I wanted to crop to a new track, and just cropping that, but that didn't seem to work either (it still seemed to crop the entire screencast).  I can sort of achieve what I want with zoom, but that's ugly (partly because I don't really know what I'm doing with zoom either).

Any suggestions?
