Thank you for the question. You cannot highlight the cursor and dim the background while recording a video in Snagit. You can highlight the cursor and much more in Camtasia Studio and Camtasia for Mac.
Here is some more information:

"If you are recording more than one video, decide on a standard set of Snagit options for your organization. For example, will your videos highlight the cursor? Should your videos all be the same size? Will you record with a caption or system stamp? "

What version of Snagit are you using and where do you see this citation? I found a reference in some older online Snagit 9 help. I don't have Snagit 9 handy at this moment, and I will need to double check if version 9 could do this.
I do know for certain that this is not possible in Snagit 11, and one way people draw attention to their cursor is by making it bigger in the Windows Control Panel, or using a "themed" cursor.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Sincerely,
Mike Curtis

I am using version 10.0.0. I was surprised to see that when I recorded a video capture, the cursor did not appear in the movie at all. Is that normal?
I was also surprised how little functionality there is with videos. Am I correct in surmising that it is not possible to remove frames or add annotations (text boxes, hotspots and the like)?
Thanks,
Ari

I think you should be able to record the cursor. Is this option clicked by chance? http://www.screencast.com/t/1IsiVA38 It's near the bottom center of the main Snagit interface (not the editor).
It's true about the limited video functionality. Snagit is a master for image editing and sharing and other image effects, but it offers only lightweight video. Camtasia Studio is our main video software. There is no video editing in Snagit.
I hope this helps; let me know if this is why your cursor wasn't getting captured, and thanks for posting back!

But the yellow cursor dot... I also vote that it be a part of snagit.
PLEASE!!
I was going to buy it, but now I'll probably just use the free version until done.

For example, free CamStudio allows different cursor shapes/colours and also records videos at pixel level ie my screen is 1920 x 1200 and this produces 1920 x 1200 videos in CamStudio, whereas Snagit produces 1920 x 1080, therefore slight loss of quality.

Does selecting the cursor option disable the user from selecting icons/buttons within the area being recorded? Seems to be the case and is a bit problematic.

I lost CamStudio when my computer had a blue screen event. Now CamStudio seems to be contaminated with malware.
I was willing to pay $50 for Snagit - but not highlight for the cursor??? I don't think so.
I've watched plenty of 'how to' Photoshop videos and again and again the person making the video is so experienced with their program that they fly all over the place and click here and there and I've lost the cursor position so I have to watch over and over and stop and go back and I just don't want to do that to my viewers.
Highlighting the cursor ought to be available for $50 when it is for free. Well, not free of malware but $$$ free. Truth is, the malware in CamStudio made me wary of downloading Snagit. I think it's time to un-install. Not buy.

As long as you download SnagIt from the Techmsith site - you can be sure that it is free of malware.
The problem with a lot of free software is little if any support. In respect to editing the cursor, the more robust Camtasia studio offers that feature,

I and others on another forum have run into malware problems with CamStudio from camstudio.org. When trying to download from sourceforge.net I found myself in a loop where it was trying to take me back to camstudio.org.
I have not found CamStudio on your site. Is it available here?
I very, very seldom install any FREE software. I'd rather pay for a safe product and I happen to believe that people should be paid for their work.
I keep hearing that your Camtasia is the very best there is. Even better than Adobe's Captivate, so I'm going to download Camtasia and compare it to Snagit to see which works best for me.
I only need to make half a dozen screen capture videos for my project.
Thank you for your quick reply. Still disappointed that I can't have the cursor highlighted all the time in Snagit to make it easier for my viewers to follow.

Camstudio is NOT a product of Techsmith - Camtasia Studio for Windows and Camtasia for the Mac ARE products of Techsmith

As has been noted, Camtasia gives a ton of control and choice for animating and highlighting cursor clicks, keystrokes, and more (see details for Win and Mac). It also keeps the cursor as a separate layer so these effects can be customized (or removed entirely) during editing. Snagit, on the other hand, creates a ready-to-share video in real time...so any effects like cursor highlighting would be "burned in" or permanent in your video. My questions for the folks who are requesting this feature:
- Would permanent cursor/click highlights be useful to you (no ability edit them later, either in Snagit or in Camtasia)?
- Would you expect to be able to toggle cursor highlighting off and on during recording or in advance of recording?

in answer to your questions:
1. Yes that would be very, very useful (ability to edit them later is not really a requirement for me);
2. Yes, in fact I am looking for a tool to be able to do that for me. It would be very useful for me if Snagit is going to support cursor and mouse pointer movement highlighting and mouse button click highlighting, during video recording.

In Camtasia, we have the option to choose which cursor we want to display, so whether I am using the mouse or the pen, my students see a visible arrow. It would be great if we could pick a cursor to display in Snagit. But as a backup, I would accept the cursor being highlighted. Really, we just need something to show the pen when gesturing while inking. (We do a lot of "look up here where I showed you this formula... now I'm going to use that formula" type of thing. So the gesturing is important.)

When capturing a video, is it possible to highlight/mark your mouse clicks? So that - for example - a user can see which button he needs to click?

When I am recording video in Snagit, I want to draw attention to when I click the mouse. Is there a way to add an animation so that the mouse click is more visual?

I am currently using Version 12.4.1 of the Windows Version of Snagit. I am wondering if it is possible to capture keystrokes and mouse clicks when using the record video option using Snagit. Is there a way to do this?

I know annotations might be better supported in Camtasia but for please implement a few annotations during video recording. At least improve mouse vibisiblty (red cirle around it for example), make mouse clicks visible (for example by increasing the circle).
