de-select active tool

I'm not sure if this is a question or an idea for future development as I'm new to Snagit13, after trialling Snagit12.

I find myself using whatever is the active tool when I'm wanting to select an object. I can't de-select the tool easily.

In other applications I'm used to pressing the 'ESC' key or Ctrl-D to de-select.

So far I've found that selecting the Move tool is the only way. A keystroke, like ESC, would be really fast as I'm using the move function repeatedly.

Thanks.

This is a new feature.  Just hit "Alt"and the tool will switch to the cursor.

Any idea why this uses 'alt' rather than the much more common and intuitive 'esc' key?  Almost every other program uses esc.  But SnagIt uses alt??? It's just one of the things that make snagit so hard and 'non-standard' to use.

I've tried the ALT key often over the last few days to deselect a tool and its behaviour seems ineffective. When  adding numbered circles and pressing ALT nothing changes. However on other tools it's possible to select other objects regardless of whether the ALT key is pressed or not. So the ALT key is ineffective. After selecting an object and then clicking an empty part of the screen the previous tool reinstates itself. Again the number circles act differently and they stay active and its not possible to select another object. So really, the ALT key doesn't do anything. It the ALT key changed the tool to the MOVE tool, this would add significantly to the work flow.

First Time you must "Call tool" with one click to tool who you want to move / change...
But it must be improved better.

"Tim" explained better here.
It helped me to understand better "Call tool".

Version 13 = More clicks.

Thank you for pointing me to that article. That explains the change and I'd noticed I could now drag an arrow onto a call-out more easily.

Yes it still needs a few tweaks. "Note that you CAN still click on the arrow to activate it and THEN drag it move it (WITHOUT switching to the tool on the toolbar)." This is not the case if the numbered circle is the current tool, you just get numbered circles on top of other objects!

It's less clicks to change the numbers on the numbered circles. I like that.

Well, I can't get the 'alt' key to work at all.  Here's what my sequence is like...

1. Select a tool (e.g. cutout tool)
2. Decide I don't want that tool active.
3. Press esc to cancel tool selection... doesn't work
4. Press alt to cancel tool selection... doesn't work

Behavior should be that if esc pressed then tool selected - or selection - is cancelled.  The way it is there is nothing that I can do to have no tool selected so I'm constantly picking tools that I don't want just to get around on the image.  And I have no clue where the totally non-standard 'alt' key proposal came from.  That's way out there in terms of UI.

I'm sure this need for easy deselecting will be addressed soon. It's a fallout from the new selection method for version 13. I'm still finding this software very useful; the panorama tool is amazing. When you need it, you really need it.

Hi and thanks for submitting your idea/feature request!

As outlined in our New Community Processes post, feature requests are open to voting up through the first, where we will then tally the votes and present the findings to our product teams. To ensure we have the most accurate data, on the 1st of the month we will be locking the threads that were listed in the Feature Request Round-up that was posted on the 15th. Once we have reviewed the submitted feature requests, our product team(s) may respond to the request, and if that is the case then that thread will then be unlocked for further discussion.

In the event that your idea is not selected for a response feel free to resubmit the idea and share it with your colleagues to garner as much exposure as possible!

Thank you again for your idea and we look forward to hearing more from you!

Hi there!

First, thank you for submitting your feature request for Snagit, we know that your time is valuable and we are truly honored that you would spend it working with Snagit and finding it in need of new features or ideas, and for that dedication, we thank you. While this is a great idea, unfortunately this feature request does not fit into our current plan for Snagit and as such, we will not be setting aside development resources for it. That is not to say that this idea may never make it into Snagit, but only that it does not fit into our current development plan. It is strongly recommended that you repost your feature request this upcoming month and then share it with your professional social networks and work colleagues, directing them to the new thread and encouraging them to share their thoughts on the idea, and click the vote button if they find it a good fit for Snagit. Truly championing your ideas may help alter our vision of Snagit’s future, so we encourage you to get out and really show the benefits of this feature to both your own circles and others like this community.

Again, we cannot thank you enough and look forward to seeing your continued support of Snagit!
