Delayed processing & incorrect file dates

Snagit often seems to delay processing/importing of screen captures for an extended period. In addition, the dates do not correlate to when the capture was actually taken, which is a big problem.

I recently worked a project where approximately 400 captures were taken over the course of a week as part of the documentation process, expecting to use them to help recreate the timeline of activity. Looking at the results two weeks later, the screen caps are a complete jumble. For example, I have 46 captures taken on 12/5 with file dates of 9:14 and 9:15 am, when they were all taken earlier that day. The order in which the dates are assigned is not even sequential with the order the captures were taken.

Hi,

The delayed processing happens if "Preview in Editor" is switched off. If you turn that on, captures will be processed immediately.

The dates being wrong feels like a bug to me, I'll pass that along to the team.

The sort order in the library is actually working as designed, it's sorting by last modified date rather than creation date. This isn't very obvious, so I've passed this feedback along to the team. Maybe we can add an option to sort by creation date in addition to modified date, would that work for you?

Thanks for the reply. I have enabled "Preview in Editor" as a workaround, although it is cumbersome since I don't need to see or work with the capture at that point, so it disrupts the natural workflow.

Please do report the date inconsistency as a bug. I understand now that Snagit doesn't actually create the capture file object until the editor is opened, but the time the capture was actually taken is clearly the correct creation date value, yet there is no way to discern that value.

As far as sorting, an option to sort by creation date would be nice, although the default file name is the creation date and is sortable, so it's already technically possible to do.

Any feedback on if/when the creation date bug will be fixed? It seems minor, but is very annoying. I can take hundreds of captures a day and since I am forced to use Preview in Editor, I have to keep moving or minimizing the Snagit window hundreds of times a day. Thanks.

Hi,

We are planning to fix this issue, but we don't have a timeline at the moment. That sounds like a rough workflow though, I'll see if we can get to it sooner.

Hi,

Our latest update (version 2018.1.2) should now have the correct capture date regardless of whether it's processed immediately or later on.

Thank you for working on this, but unless I am missing something, the solution is not useful.

I do see if I use "Get Info..." that the Created date now correctly reflects when the capture was taken.

However, the "Date" sort in the library still uses the modification date (which is really the "this is when Snagit imported the image" date), with no option to use the created date. The filename assigned to files also uses this date.

So I turned off Preview in Editor, took a bunch of captures, and opened up the library to work with them, and now have captures in a completely jumbled order with no ability to reorder them other than using "Get Info" to look at the real date and rename them all manually...

To properly correct this, two additional modifications are needed:
  1. Generate the Name based on the Created date.
  2. Provide an option to sort by either Created date or Modified date.
Thanks!

Hi,

We just release a 2018.2.0 update which adds the ability to sort captures in the library by created date or modified date. I hope this will simplify your workflow!
