Develop an option for a fixed aspect ratio in the All In One profile

I hope that the SnagIt development team reads this forum. I used to use Photoshop for all my graphic editing needs. I now use SnagIt for almost all of my editing needs. Unfortunately I still have to use Photoshop for only one reason - being able to set an aspect ratio when cropping an area. As an appraiser, I need to crop an area of a property photo and plug it into a fixed sized cell in a Word table for my report. In Photoshop I can set the aspect ratio and crop whatever area I want knowing that it will display perfectly in the fixed sized cell. Imagine that the All In One profile always kept the same length to width ratio regardless of how large or small the area is that is being captured. This is exactly the type of tool I would like to see in SnagIt. If SnagIt could incorporate this into their arsenal of tools, I could trash Photoshop and use SnagIt exclusively for all my graphic editing needs. Two screen captures are attached from Photoshop that illustrate this concept.

Hi,
This makes a lot of sense and thanks for the example and description of your workflow. With Jing we let you hold Ctrl or Shift as you select to lock a 4:3 or 16:9 ratio. This is typically most important for video creation, and it sounds like you're looking for something a more customizable.

Would something similar to what Jing does work for you?

+1 on the original post. And yes, more customizable, e.g. 2:1, 3:1, etc.

Interesting... the original post was 4 years ago and the request is "under consideration".  Perhaps Tech Smith should change the request's status to "don't hold your breath".

Is this ever going to be implemented? Variations on this idea have been requested on this forum many times over the years, yet it's still not implemented...

I would like to see this as well. I'm capturing images for Facebook Open Graph which wants to see images at a 19.1:1 aspect ratio (re: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing/best-practices#images). Would be very handy to just be able to capture at this ratio.

Nothing like posting on a topic to get the creative juices flowing. Shortly after posting I came up with a workaround. When I start a capture and select a region, the dimensions of the capture appear and are editable. I can enter dimensions like 1200 x 630 (which messes up the capture area but gives me the desired aspect ratio), then between dragging the capture area around on the screen, and resizing the capture area by holding the shift key and dragging the corner handles (which seems to preserve the aspect ratio) I can get the area I need. Once captured I can then resize the image to get the desired dimensions. Not perfect, but it gets me where I need to go.

Hi and thanks for submitting your idea/feature request!

As outlined in our New Community Processes post, feature requests are open to voting up through the first, where we will then tally the votes and present the findings to our product teams. To ensure we have the most accurate data, on the 1st of the month we will be locking the threads that were listed in the Feature Request Round-up that was posted on the 15th. Once we have reviewed the submitted feature requests, our product team(s) may respond to the request, and if that is the case then that thread will then be unlocked for further discussion.

In the event that your idea is not selected for a response feel free to resubmit the idea and share it with your colleagues to garner as much exposure as possible!

Thank you again for your idea and we look forward to hearing more from you!

This is one of the most requested features for Snagit. It is a rather old request, so I’d like to make sure people needs haven’t changed and make sure I understand it fully.
I’m seeing two levels of solving this:
  1. We add a lock aspect ratio button on during capture with All-in-One.
  2. We additionally add a drop down to select different aspect ratios.

If we were to implement number 1, it would look something like this:

Please let me know if this isn’t what you’re asking for. This is something you’d like when capturing correct? Not in Editor? (I ask because the example giving was of cropping in Photoshop after the fact, but I’m assuming that was for illustrative purposes)
