Do production settings result in laggy video?

Hey all!

I produced a 34min long video in 1920x1080 resolution and uploaded it on moodle (e-learning platform) within the h5p plugin. Now I got sometimes the feedback from the viewers that the video is laggy or freezes for some seconds before it continues. So I rewatched the video and sometimes I get the same problem but it's not always.

Now I am wondering if I am using the wrong production settings so I googled a little bit and produced my video with other settings but still the same outcome. Maybe you guys can help me while looking over my settings:
  • Framerate = 30
  • KeyFrame = every 1s (in the past got default 5)
  • H.264 Profile = high (in the past got default baseline)
  • H.264 Level = auto
  • Farbmodus = NTSC
  • Audio = 192Kbit/s
  • Bitrate = 5000kbps
  • Quality = 75%

There is nothing wrong with your production settings. I do not know anything about the Moodle h5p pluggin, but if it's not a streaming server, that's probably the issue. We use streaming services such as Vimeo to embed videos into our SCORM courses on the LMS because streamers are capable of adjusting delivery size and quality to accommodate the target viewing system and bandwidth. Most of the time, a streaming service delivers high resolution versions of your video. When there is a (unavoidable) bottleneck in the network, the streaming service substitutes a lower resolution version so it plays without lagging or freezing. It's not perfect, but it is generally way better than allowing the LMS to stream the video.

If it doesn't do it all the time on "Moodle" then it sounds like the problem must be with that platform, which I assume to be an online platform, either on an internal "intranet" network, or over the internet. You've exported the video in 1920x1080, which is 1080p full HD. Try exporting the video from Camtasia in 720p, uploading that to the platform, then see if you get the same problem playing it back. Our company Sharepoint internal network platform used to struggle with anything over 720p, buffering, like yours has been on your platform. Now that we've started upgrading the network, there's no buffering on 1080p any more. Try 720p and let us know if it solves your problem.

Thank you both for the quick responses! I will test it out with 720p and maybe switch to vimeo or something. Lets hope it will solve the problem!

not sure if relevant [don't use Moodle], but if the video has a lot of zooming in a short time period, and the MP4 is being viewed in a browser, than I have seen the lagging/freezes mentioned

fix was to slow down or remove the zooms

So me again...I tested it out with producing the videos in 720p and for now I don't have any lags or something. But I am not pleased with the quality of the font now.


The first picture is in 720p with 100% Quality and the second is in 1080p with 75% Quality. You see that the color is different between the two and also the font is blurred in the first one. I did expect a little visible different between the two productions but I couldn't thought that it is this obvious or could it a mistake by me? Production settings are the same except quality and resolution.

regarding the quality of the produced video, best results are achieved when recording/capture dimension, editing, and productions are all done at the same resolution

if original media is 1080p, downsizing to 720p will adversely affect quality; just physics; would be best if production was also at 1080p

regarding the quality setting, there is very little to be gained by using a quality greater than 70% [i.e., not noticeable]

for screen capture media, a quality of 60% should be satisfactory

when you use larger quality settings, the video file size can grow substantially, possibly causing the issue you described

perhaps try a 1080p production at 60%; that might solve the problem?

To be honest, I don't notice much difference between the two, even when zooming in.

I almost always have to host our videos on my organization's servers rather than using Vimeo or YouTube. Because our offices are scattered all over and have different network capabilities, I got in the habit of outputting videos in 1080p, 720p, and 480p. I leave the keyframe rate at 1/sec and never go below 75 percent on the quality (I don't agree with their warning message and usually use 100 unless it's a huge 100mpbs 4k video haha).

Anyway, I recommend exporting a 1080p version because if it's elearning, there's a good chance there's fine details/text and you want to preserve the quality. I also recommend doing the lower resolutions videos and alerting your staff that if they have issues loading the 1080p version, to try the "low-bandwidth" versions.
