When speed is the name of the game, you don't always want to have to hit Save As..., save to a PNG, choose a location for the file, and then find it in Windows Explorer. There is the Copy All button in Editor, but there are occasions when you need an actual file and not an image on the clipboard. It would be great to be able to drag directly from the tray to create a PNG and drop it wherever you need it.

For example, to drag-and-drop the image below, I have to snap it and then do File->Save. If I tried to drag from the tray before doing the save, it just doesn't work.
Really looking forward to this! Thanks!

Are you dragging and dropping onto an application? If you drag-and-drop from the tray to your Desktop, does it work properly?

If I grab a screen shot and then try to drag it from the try into this post, the "upload image" area" lights up, but the image does not drop.
If I do "save" in the snagit editor and then try again, it works fine!
So a solution could be as easy as just having the editor autosave each new snap to a temp file?

Drag from tray to Desktop then drag from Desktop to the Upload Image spot. Works fine for me 99% of the time.

Much easier for me to do a save then to open a desktop window somewhere, switch back to snagit, drag to desktop, find destination window again, and drag to there!
Still would be GREAT if snagit just offered the file to the drag and drop destination automatically. They are likely already saving it as a temp file somewhere anyway.

Thus, I recommend to you to resize windows to allow view of some desktop real estate. You can then cut your five steps down to two steps.

As an aside, for me personally, I like full screen because it's helpful when trying to focus on what you are doing. Sometimes the desktop is busy and becomes a distraction.

If you're experiencing something other than that, it's a bug and I'd invite you to get in touch with our support team so we can diagnose and fix the issue. Thanks in advance! :)
Here's a GIF showing how it works on Windows:

very webpage?
1. Press PrintScreen
2. Grab a snap
3. Drag from the tray in the Snagit Editor to the "Upload Image" box on this webpage right here.
4. See flash and feedback, but image does not actually get dropped into the box.
5. Now go back to the Snagit editor and do "save".
6. Now drag again from Snag IT editor to to this webpage, and everything is great.
100% reproducible on all machines I've tried.
Snagit 8.1.0 on windows. Thanks!

I wonder how my machines are different from yours?
I guess I'll open a support ticket.
Thanks!!!!

How large (in terms of file size) are your image? Mouse over the thumbnail to get their size.
The reason I ask is because there may be a size limit at the sites you're attempting to upload so if the drag-and-drop method is not working for you specifically, it is possible that the file is simply too large and it is being rejected.

If you click Edit > Editor Preferences... > Library tab, do you have the option for automatically saving captures to the Library enabled? Maybe that's it?

While it's not on the fly (and I apologize if the animated GIF makes it seem that way), you can change the drag-and-drop image format in the Snagit Preferences under the Advanced tab.

I know it is not immediate, but it may help.
Adding an option to change the format on the fly would likely slow down the entire process and add additional clicks. Is there a particular reason why you'd want to change the formats on the fly?

Although, one thing I was wondering about would be an option where one could store images in a floating window. Perhaps make it so the library could operate as a floating window and one could easily drag images from the smaller window. Maybe even offer an option that was "always on top" for the floating window?
Just pondering out loud a bit. Rick :)

Like others, I just want to copy and paste .jpg images from the Mac Clipboard into Microsoft OneNote and Evernote without having to go through this tray when I don't want to edit an image, which is about 80% of the time.

This shows Mac but it works the same on Windows. This is using Teams in a web browser; I have not tried it with the Teams desktop client.
Looks like there may be an issue with GIFs created by Snagit on Windows not animating properly in Teams. We'll look into that further.

Sorry, I goofed on my previous comment. It DOES leave the snagproj file in the tray. What I meant was that (as you know) if you Save As, then you get that saved file in the tray AND the snagproj, so you have to deal with them both. At least with dragging, the saved file is immediately gone and then you can decide whether to save the snagproj itself or trash it. Sorry for the mistake.

I've raised a ticket. Support say that it is a bug with no ETA for a fix. It's not clear whether it was broken by the 19 release, or whether it has never worked properly.
I'm also disappointed to be informed that the option to choose an output format other than PNG is for Mac only. I assumed the post above by the Online Community Admin would be applicable to all platforms. I don't see such why basic functionality would be limited to a single platform.

He also told me that currently Drag and Drop on Windows is PNG only and that you do "not have any way to adjust that".

You might be thinking of the old Share Properties dialog where you could set a global format preference that would apply to all shared images across all outputs (e.g., PPT, Word, email, Dropbox, Twitter, etc). Then when you hit the Share button and chose email, you would get a PDF attached to an email. Is that what you had in mind?
Regardless, I agree that the steps for getting a capture attached to an email as PDF are not as streamlined as they could be in Snagit on Windows. On Mac, you can set a global format preference for dragging and pasting images out of Snagit (which could be set to PDF, for example). We have not yet prioritized it above other things for adding this functionality to Windows...but it's certainly worth considering. Would this suit your workflow?

This thread is personally amusing to me because I saw early on that I thought I wouldn't really find value in the feature. And how wrong I was on THAT! I've done a complete 180 from thinking I'd never use it or find it useful to it being my primary way of interacting with SnagIt, the facebook, and Pinterest.
Cheers... Rick :)

Dragging PDFs from the tray on Mac was only just added in our Snagit 2019 release, so it won't be available on older versions. In older versions you can choose File > Export to PDF.

Dragging from the tray does not work. Support told me that it is a bug and there is no ETA for a fix.
Chris Larson, Snagit Technical Product Manager told me a month ago he would contact me for further information. He did, and I provided him the requested information. I have heard nothing since.

Forgive me for believing that, actually, you had completely walked away from this and nothing further would have happened had I not posted here.
I'll reply to your email in order that we can set-up screen sharing and hopefully fix it.

We follow a system along these lines:

But like I said, just because it didn't get prioritized this time, doesn't mean that it won't get fixed. Looking forward to our screen share so we can get to the bottom of it! :)

You then contacted me for further information, which I provided immediately. I heard nothing from you for a month. I posted here and suddenly you want to set up screen-sharing.
Whatever prioritizing you do internally, you should definitely write something into the loop so that paying customers who have reported bugs are kept up-to-date on what is going on.

If it's Windows, dragging an image from the tray should be working. Assuming, of course, that what you are dragging the image TO supports it.
One small thing I've noticed about this is that oftentimes you get in a hurry, you click and drag and release and nothing happens. You have to train yourself to wait ever so briefly after you click and drag. I'm not sure about exactly what's happening behind the scenes, but I imagine an electronic "handshake" of some sort, where the receiving application is now ready and signals SnagIt. At that time, you should see a kind of ghosted version of the thumbnail. And when you see that, THEN you release the mouse and the image should be copied. This process is very quick, but not quite as quick as a fast drag and drop can be. LOL
Can't figure what to suggest if you are using Mac. Perhaps someone else has a better idea.
Cheers... Rick :)
