the error is suggesting that the project file, which might be a .camproj file type, is a Camtasia 8 [or earlier version] project?

open the project with a text editor, and copy the 1st 10 or so lines, and post them here

Camtasia 2019 project files are .tscproj file type, and the two file types have a totally different structure

does not look like a project file; are you using Camtasia for Windows?

a .tscproj file looks like ...

{
  "title" : "",
  "description" : "",
  "author" : "",
  "targetLoudness" : -18.0,
  "shouldApplyLoudnessNormalization" : false,
  "videoFormatFrameRate" : 30,
  "audioFormatSampleRate" : 44100,
  "width" : 1920.0,
  "height" : 1080.0,
  "version" : "3.0",
  "editRate" : 30,
  "authoringClientName" :  {
    "name" : "Camtasia",
    "platform" : "Windows",
    "version" : "19.0"
  },
  "sourceBin" : [
    {

also, since you are on Camtasia 2019 Windows, you might want to contact free tech support ...

When I change the suffix of your file to ".camproj" I get the warning window
This project must be upgraded before it can be used with this version of Camtasia. Open the project in Camtasia Studio 8, upgrade, and save the project. Then try again.
This is with Camtasia v2019.0.7 (Build 5034) - updated today.
Does this help you at all?

Yes, it did. I also tried changing the suffix to mp4, MTS, avi - all were unreadable by two video players. So I was surprised to see that Camtasia did recognize the file as a Camera project.

thanks again; weird; based on file's appearance in a text editor, it's not a Camtasia 2019 project file?

I'm guessing Camtasia just sees the .tscproj extension, but does not recognize the file itself?

another thought ... could the .tscproj be encrypted?

I tried to open a .camproj file in 2019. It says I need to open and convert it in Camtasia 8. I downloaded Camtasia 8 and the file said it had been created in an earlier version. .camproj wasn't in the media listing in Camtasia  8. Do I also need to download Camtasia 6 and see if it will work to convert the files? or are they gone for good? i've been using Camtasia for years and now it seems my older .camproj files no longer work.

old Camtasia project files should still work; you just need to open them in correct version, and upgrade the project if appropriate; assuming the media files are still available

do you have a zipped version of the project you're trying to open?

also, can you post a screenshot of the 1st 20 lines of the project file [open it with a text editor]?
