Hey Teresa,

Are you getting that error when you try to share to a certain place, ex. Youtube?

Hey Guys,

Really sorry that you are encountering this error. Hopefully we can get you fixed up. Is there any way everyone who is seeing this problem can open a ticket so we can collect a bit more information from you? You can do so here: https://support.techsmith.com/anonymo...

Thanks!

Submitting a support ticket is useless!
It has been my experience that NO ONE EVER RESPONDS.

Submitted a ticket as well:

I get the same error after upgrading to 11.2 'Encountered an improper argument'. I get the error after having made a Capture. Also, Snag-It never closes properly and during shutdown of my computer (Windows XP) it hangs and I have to repeatedly "End Program" of Snag-It. After I uninstall Snag-It there are no shutdown issues.

Thanks Guys.

I recently upgraded my version of Snagit to 11.2.0 (build 101). Every time I take a screen capture, I get this pop-up error - encountered an improper argument. I tried to create an account and open a ticket for the error, and the techsmith system said it would send an email to verify me, and I never received it, and no, it's not in my junk mail. I've always loved SnagIt and rely on it in my job, and now I'm pretty disappointed. I wish I had never upgraded.

Hi Carol Askew (and the others that have been having this issue)

I've reset SnagIt to run at Start Up (it puts a little balloon at the very top of my monitor, mostly hidden). I find when I take captures from this balloon I no longer have this issue. Obviously a bug...hopefully it'll get fixed soon.

I tried to post this tonight to Parker...the Web Site must be having issues. Perhaps he'll read it here or you can forward...

Hi Parker Hotchkiss

First, let me tell you the issues I had getting to this Screen. It took 3 minutes to get to the Log On Screen after I clicked on your Link in your Email. It took a further 3 minutes to get to this Screen after I logged in on the Log On Screen. That's unacceptable.

Now, to your question...

When I capture from the OneClick menu (the one that hides on the top of my screen), the error does not occur.

When I capture from the Quick Launch Icon the error does occur...consitently...ALL the time.

Further, when I clicked the Submit Button...nothing happned.

Does this help?

Is this issue being worked on? If so, is there a target date for a resolution?

SnagIt just freezes and closes when I try to save any capture.
How can I get a roll back to SnagIt 11.0?
A working copy is SOOOO much better than nothing. This issue just does not seem to be too important to anyone there!

I am having the same problem. It seems to just be an error message that I can click OK on and move on, but is quite annoying.

Is there any way to roll back to the previous version? I tried the work-around that someone else posted, but for some reason that didn't work for me - I still get the error. I take screenshots all day every day for my job. I did log the issue, submitted a dump file, but then have not heard anything since April 4.

Hi Carol.
I found a link on a Techsmith blog (somewhere) to the Snagit 11.2 download. Here is what I did Saturday 4/14/13.

I did a deep install using "Youruninstaller 7" to get rid of "every" trace of Snagit. I did that because I have been using Snagit since about version 6 I think. I not sure it is necessary for everyone.

Make sure you have your serial KEY # handy. Otherwise you go into trial mode.

I installed the new download and installed the 11.2 version from scratch . . . and IT NOW WORKS!! For me at least.

It is pretty sad to think of my self as techy. It is evem more sad that Techsmith has let this go on for so long.

Good luck, hope it works for you all with the same problem.

@mikek3

I took your advice and did a Registry Clean and a Short Cuts Fixer using Clary Utilities (free Download). After doing so, I took 10 Captures (9 Region and 1 Scrolling). All performed without error.

Perhaps there's some detritus hanging around with Snagit UnInstall that's causing the issue?

Ever since upgrading to the newest version of SnagIt, I am getting an error every time I capture an image that says "Encountered an improper arguement". Can you please help me to eliminate this error?

Hi all,

I've updated SnagIt to version 11.2.1.72, but it didn't fix the issue :(

(From my limited understanding......), if you have the option "Make Editor the active window on capture" TICKED, you will get the error message; if you UNTICK that option, you should be fine. But the interesting thing is, not all our 100+ PCs have the same issue, only a handful of users have reported seeing the error message.

To manually make the change: Open up Snagit > Tools > Program Preferences... > (under Editor options) UNTICK the "Make Editor the active window on capture" option.

Using registry keys:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\SnagIt\11]
"ForegroundEditor"=dword:00000000

Q. What's the implication of this change?
A. If the user is taking the screenshot using the "Print Screen" key on the keyboard, then they won't see any changes at all. If the user opens up the Snagit software first and press the BIG RED icon to take the screenshot, then they'll get the "Snagit" window popping up in front of their "Snagit Editor" window, which they can click on the background and move the "Snagit Editor" window to the front.

This workaround is not perfect, but at least (if it works for you) you won't have any error messages popping up, which probably translate to: less helpdesk phone calls!

For the future (if anyone's got the time): since this error message isn't consistently showing up on all our users' PCs, I guess there must be something different between their setups! If you have time, I guess you can export all the registry keys from Snagit and compare them (e.g.: using EditPad Pro) and see whether you can find the bug that caused the issue. I'd imagine this is only a minor issue with the software, and with enough time / resources, the bug can be found. If you're limited by time and are lazy like me, we can always wait for Snagit to release an update to fix it. But in the mean time, the workaround above should buy you a bit of time :)

This error usually occurs when you have installed two versions of snagit, in other words you already had snagit and you upgraded to a newer version.  So what you need to do is clear out the techsmith temporary folder.  Depending on which operating system you have, you should find the folder in this general path:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\TechSmith

The username in the path is the profile name of the current user.  Delete everything in the techsmith folder and you should be smooth sailing from there. ;)

When you say "temporary folder" what do you mean? I do not see a folder named "Temp" or "Temporary". Thanks
