Please help!

I have recreated my Camtasia video three times, and it's driving me nuts. When I try to save my project, it goes smoothly. I even exported to zip files just to make sure.

But when I open up the saved camproj files, and even when I use the "import zipped project..." I get this same error. It looks like a valid camproj file, so I feel like this error message is catching some other error instead.

Also, when I was completed with my video and tried to publish, an error popped up then as well. My project includes a few of the built-in effects (transitions, audio edits, zoom n pan, callouts), mp3 files, jpegs, and screencapture vids. I am using the Trial version of V8.0.1 on Windows 7 Enterprise.

Thanks,

Sami

I think I've got a solution. If you shut down your computer without warning, the project might autosave some of the work you did. When the text comes, "would you like to recover this," say no! It happened twice tome, and whenever I clicked "yes," The error would always come.

I'm running the most up to date version and this has happened, this is bloody ridiculous, I've wasted a lot of time on this, thank god I was just doing a personal project and not a freelance project or I (and my client) would be very pissed (and I don't mean drunk).
A bug this serious shouldn't stay in a peice of software for more than a few days, the devs should have dropped everything to get this fixed, this has broken the software and has made me move to other software. Congratulations on a job well done techsmith...

I have been having this problem less lately since 8.3 or whatever the newest update is - you basically have to mind your clip bin like a hawk and never modify a file once you've imported it.

It's weird that the same problem would go on for several months... I wonder what the bug could be... Whatever it is, I guess it must be complicated? I mean "saving your work" is the most important thing any piece of software can do.

No, I still love camtasia studio. Try seeing the file properties, and load the latest previous version you can find. Then edit that on CS. At least you won't lose all your work! Cheer up!

If you have the ability I'd suggest just using Camtasia for Recording, convert your Camproj file to .mp4 or .mov and do the editing in something else. I prefer Final Cut Express (much cheaper than Pro, but MAC only program) and I've heard positive things about Sony Vegas.

Shiny Alligator: what do you mean? CS can't open a campproj. Telling a person who just lost 3 months work to cheer up is kind of mean, don't you think? Unless I'm not following your advice.

shoppingpink57, your frustration is understood

best practice is to periodically back up a project by exporting as zip with a version # appended to name to guard against a possible project corruption glitch and losing all your work. With the zip archives, you can always reload using the last known good backup.

it is also best to periodically simplify projects that have accumulated many edits over time. you can do this by producing as AVI and using that AVI in a new project to continue project development and editing you can also simplify audio by exporting audio [file menu] then substitute the existing audio [lots of splits] with the new single audio clip

if the project is long in duration, it also helps to break up the project into segments using the Library, and then edit the separate section assets

this tutorial may be helpful ...

HERE'S A FIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For all of you others who felt the world coming to an end when receiving this error I have great news. THERE IS A FIX! I found that Camtasia Studio 8 inserts blank html coding sections randomly into the file, doesn't typically happen but when it does...IT SUCKS. It's hard to put the process in words but I'll try my best and include a picture as to what to remove. I did this and was able to save my 80+ hour project and it only takes about 2-5 minutes depending on how computer savvy you are. Here it goes:

Locate your .camproj file

Make a copy of the file and paste it in the same folder the original is in (be sure to name it differently like “backup”

Right click the original file and select “Open With”

Open the file with “Notepad”, this will open the html coding

Press Control+F to open the finder window

Search for src=“” (that is two quotations, no spaces, src=“”)

***Delete the series of lines that begin with this src=“” The very beginning of the line will look like this (the id number may be different): <Source id=“4” src=“” , delete all the way up to and including the closing of the line which looks like this:
Use the finder to “find next” and do the same for any others that it locates

Once all are removed, click “File” and “Save as”, name the file something different like “Fixed Version.camproj and save it in the same folder as the original file (be sure to add the “.camproj” at the end of the file name.)

Open the folder you saved it in, right click the FIXED file and select open with and choose Camtasia. Should open as originally saved before it pooped out on you.

***Refer to the picture for what to delete, the highlighted field is what would be removed, it could be anywhere in the coding.

I have to post the picture in a comment below as it pastes over the text and you NEED all of these instructions! So SEE BELOW IMAGE FOR WHAT TO DELETE!

Hope it helps:

I don't know anything about XML, Codes, Programming, etc. But I noticed the Line "CSMLData" was missing in my valid .camproj file. (I opened my problem-file with notepad and compared it with a new and empty file).
Make sure to set < or > right.

Projekt_MetaData.....
/Projekt_MetaData

CSMLData_ <<< that solved the Problem
GoProject id=....

That fixed the error on my file I worked on since days!!

This is seriously messed up. I've been a big fan of techsmith products for years but Camtasia 8 is just bad software. I work in software so I know. I've submitted a question but based on these responses I'm not too optimistic. I only lost a full days work, but still.

But it's not just the work ... it's the discouragement and bummer feeling you get when you realize you have to do it all over. Really robs the joy out of the work.

Anyone remember the episode of the Waltons when John Boy's novel burned? That's the general feeling that this thread exudes.

I'm only in ninth grade, but have full knowledge of camtasia studio. The error happened 3 times to me, but I always found some way out of it. I loaded the previous versions, made backup copies, and did everything. But remember, true fans will always love the team/company (the latter in this case). i still love techsmith.

I've only been using it for a few months having recently changed jobs but everything I've read online & LinkedIn suggests that version 8 is pretty bad compared to previous releases.

When it comes to editing large video projects - regardless of software it's just best practice to break things up into smaller parts and save backups periodically so you never have to go all the way back to square 1.

This happen - harddrives crash, files corrupt etc

shiny alligator, no I am not feeling better because there is no previous version. the file is just corrupt. I back up my whole system nightly, but this was a project that I started early in the morning and it broke at the end of the day. so there is nothing to recover. I do have my audio files and camrecs still, but all the careful edits made all day are poof. hey it's Ground Hogs Day, I get to live yesterday again. QC is everything in software development. this product was not ready for releases if the problem is this widespread

HTML thing didn't work for me.Apparently there are numerous things that can cause the issue, which might explain why it's taking forever to fix. From now on I just have to save and save as constantly so I always have 2 pretty recent copies. Not ideal but its working. What was lost is long gone and now mostly recreated 2 days later.

Is this for real - the first couple times I thought it was user error - I have wasted so much time recreating videos during the trial period -I was about to buy the software because the interface is excellent but this is total garbage - its beyond an irritating bug it renders this program totally ________ useless.

Jing is excellent and I so is this program to use - but now that I have lost two business days of work I have to say I am dumbfounded that this bug is in the release versions of the software. I am using the latest version of the software.

I will try the html fix.

At the moment I'm stuck with Camtasia until we figure out another workflow for videos (which is actually a shame because I do like a lot about it).

Here's my current solution to avoid losing any more work: about every 5-10 minutes I do a File-->Save and also a File-->Save As. I keep alternating and overwriting two versions of these files so that even when one bombs out, I've got another copy sitting there that's not very old. The truth is that I don't think I can ever stop doing this annoying method even when they claim to have it fixed because the risk of losing work again is too awful to contemplate.

It's the epitome of a kludge but at the moment it's the only way I can use Camtasia.

Dear Techsmith Development and Camtasia users ...

I have been on here moaning about this bug, and it does suck, but after spending the last 3 days immersed in this program, I do want to add that Camtasia really is a very cool program that is fun to use and produces excellent results (just beware the self-destructing camproj files). There really is nothing comparable on the market (I know because I just looked again).

So Dave O'Rourke, you can come out of the dog house. Just fix that dang bug and get back back to making Camtasia 9 even better.

Again, my sincere apologies to all who have been affected by this issue. Thanks to those who have contacted us, and especially to those who have shared their projects with us. The dev team has been doing root cause analysis on all escalated support cases, adding fixes and working to ensure that the issues are fixed. We've also been adding automated project tests, which allows us to ratchet up our quality assurance, and have confidence that known issues are fixed and will not reappear.

Today, we released an 8.0.4 release that should address the issues in this thread. Here's a brief summary of the root causes we've identified, and how this release addresses these problems:

1. In Camtasia Studio 8.0.0 - 8.0.3, Clip speed adjustments would sometimes cause adjacent clips to overlap by 1 frame, which is a corrupt state. If the project was saved in this state, it would fail to open.

Camtasia Studio 8.0.4 addresses the root cause, preventing this type of corruption. 8.0.4 also will open and correct any projects saved in earlier versions that are affected by this issue.

2. In Camtasia Studio 8.0.0 - 8.0.3, if changes were made to media files (images, audio, video) outside of Camtasia Studio, while the project was closed, this could lead to failures when the project was reopened. This was, by far, the most common cause.

Camtasia Studio 8.0.4 addresses this problem in the following ways:
a. We added a new "Offline" state for media (images, audio, video). On project open, if media files have changed (or gone missing, and you opt not to reconnect them), they will be put into an "Offline" state. All media in an offline state will appear on the timeline, but will not render. All edits are preserved, and the media can be reconnected later.
b. We added a new "Update media" option, which can be used to reconnect an "Offline" media with its original source file. The "Update media" menu can also be used to replace one source media with a new one. We've tried to enable some common use cases, such as replacing an image with a new one, or replacing a video or audio clip with a similar clip, even if it's a little longer or shorter.

Here's a short screencast showing how this works: http://screencast.com/t/Z3PjtyrCT (2:15)

To get the update, you can use the Help > Check for updates menu. This will provide a link to the download for the update. After it's downloaded, close Camtasia Studio and run the update EXE. You do not need to uninstall. The udpate will be applied, and the next time you launch, you will be running Camtasia Studio 8.0.4.

Once again, we we apologize for the frustration this has caused. If you've hit the problems in this thread, please try the 8.0.4 update. If you encounter any further issues, please contact our TechSupport staff by submitting a question at http://support.techsmith.com and someone will respond to you by email to help troubleshoot further.

Unfortunately,
I had the same problem -- but this occurred when I switched one AVI file for another (with the same name). Don't know if it corrupted the XML file with the .camproj extenstion. Tried the fix above to no avail. Lost 1 day of work. I took the bright side and decided that some of the edits in the final version where better than the corrupted one.

Having an "AUTOSAVE COPY" might be a good idea. I know Abode Premier Pro has an AUTOSAVE feature.

All in all, this is a good product at a very reasonable price but this problem does crop up way too frequently.

TB,

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. We do have an autosave feature already, though it sounds like it didn't help you in this case. Please make sure you are using the latest version. The current version is 8.0.4, which has fixes for the issues in this thread. You can use the Help > Check for updates... menu to see if there's a newer version available. You can use the Help > About Camtasia Studio... menu to see which version you currently have installed. Hope this helps.

I created a camrec file using CS8.03 (I did not save a camproj). When I tried to import it, I got the msg:

"Cannot load file It is either an unsupported media type or required codecs are not found."

So I read this forum and installed CS8.04, but the same thing still happens.

I find it hard to believe that this is a codec problem, as I played back and listened to the recording before I saved it. Using exactly the same recording setup (Edirol UA25 with Yeti Pro mic on XLR cables) I am able to save and import other camrecs.

I have started a support ticket with TechSmith, but wondered if anyone here had any further insights.
