Extend option is unexpectedly disabled

I asked support:

This has been bugging me for a long time. I frequently am unable to use the Extend menu because it is disabled everywhere (right click, and under the Edit menu. The "E" shortcut doesn't do anything either.

At other times, though, I can extend with no problem.

This happens even though the clip is selected.

Are there situations where "Extend" should not be available or is this a bug. If the latter, is there a work-around?

Support replied:

There are times that the Extend Frame option would not be available; primarily it is if you have content to the right of a split and you have not moved that content "down" the timeline (to the right) thus making space. When you try to extend the frame, is there space to the right? Also, are you trying to extend callouts (which would not work), or are they images and videos?

My Suggestion:

Rather than disabling features, programmers should leave them enabled. If a user tries to use a feature in an context that in the past would have been disabled, the software should pop-up an explaining why they can’t use it.

Why? Because a current best practice in software design is not to frustrate a user by disabling features. But to help the user understand why a feature isn't available when they select it.

Extend Frame should be enabled whenever the playhead is over a selected video clip (assuming the track is enabled and unlocked). Anything on the track to the right of the playhead will get shifted over as necessary to make room for the extended frame.

That doesn't sound like a known bug. Are you seeing any pattern to when you see it... particular type of clip, etc?

Getting the playhead (vertical line) over the frame you want to extend solved it for me. There seems to be some issue with extending an extension, and the solution to that is to set the duration when you initially extend. You can see how many seconds you need by looking at the timeline. Best practice might be to overextend and then pull the right back to where you want it.

easiest way to extend an existing extension is to grab the right end, and drag it out; to work, there must be open space on that track, to drag in to; the extension acts like an image or saved frame

Kevin,

It has not been working the way you describe.  At times, over a clip that unlocked, the option is disabled. I haven't seen a pattern. The clips are always trecs.

However, contrary to what you said, Robert R. in a support ticket told me earlier today:
If there is open space to the right of where you are trying to extend the frame, but it is not large enough, it will disable to feature; additionally you can not be extending the frame when your playhead is on a split; instead move it to the frame just before the split; that should work for you.

In my tests just now, I confirmed his description of when it is disabled. I concluded that the space I on occasion deliberately opened to the right of the clip was causing the problem.

This is annoying me as well. This occurs when I try to extend frame in the same region again. As in the previous extension was not enough. The only way I found is to do ctrl + Z and add a more correct extension number

I'm having the same problem. Seems like you can't extend within a frame that has already been extended?

Instead of Expand, you change and existing expansion using Duration.

Here is a quick graphic showing you how to extend a frame that's already been extended.

Although, if you are have auto-stitching enabled you will need to split the extended frame first.

this has been bugging me too, Extend frame is grayed out on Camtasia 9, I now realize it was mainly due to not having the playhead on the clip.
The other issue I had extending was using a video from a PowerPoint slide deck via the plug in. I split the video by slide but when I dragged each split clip they showed up the other slides which I didn't want so extend frame menu option was the only way to go.

Now I have Extend Frame working, request for improvement:
It would be great if there was an option to automatically extend selected clip to the max remaining space, i.e. extend all the way to the next clip on the right.
Today the experience is type a big number in the extend box (that is bigger than remaining space), the pop up shows min and max values (nice feature btw) So I enter the max value manually.
If you could quickly select the max (or min) value to extend automatically would save a lot of time when extending a lot of clips from a slide deck for example, me thinks :)

I have the same problem...there's no rhyme or reason why sometimes I can extend while other times the feature is disabled...very frustrating

biggest cause of this is there not being room at right end of clip you're trying to extend

can you make a short screencast of you trying to extend the frame; host on screencast.com

also, the playhead has to be over the desired frame location?

Same problem.  There is plenty of space to the right of the clip.  It's a video clip, not a picture.  Clip is selected.  The playhead is over the desired frame location.  Still disabled.
