External USB audio interface Snagit

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a satisfied user of “Snagit” (V 12.4.1.). I use your software for producing professional video tutorials about -part ly very complecated and difficult – questions all around sound, music production etc. There are some links attached to this message, just in case you ́d like examples).

I exclusively use Windows PCs (Windos 7 professional) for my productions and I have only used the internal soundcard (ASUS XONAR DX) for recording the sound together with the goings on on the monitor. No problem ever. Snagit works fast and reliable. Great!

But now about a problem:

I am going to use external sound cards, Focusrite USB Audio Interfaces to be precise, for some future projects. I ́ve tried – preparing these projects – external USB audio interfaces (ZOOM Products). Everything worked fine – but for Snagit.

I didn ́t manage to make Snagit record the sound from the USB Audio interface, the external sound card. I ́ve tried everything I can think of (in Windows and and in Snagit), but I allways get only sound – if at all – from my internal sound card.

Can you help me with this problem?

And what about the new Version (V 13) of Snagit. Will it be easier to get what I need with this new Version? And a general queation about the new version: Does use the same amount of system resources or does it need more?

I thank you in advance.

Sincerely yours

Rolf Kasten

Hi rofilm;

Unfortunately the issue stems from the use of an unsupported device (the USB audio interface). If you disconnect the USB audio interface, plug the microphone in directly, then restart Snagit it should work as expected.

Hello Robbert,
at first and of course I ́d like to thank you for your fast and clear answer. It ́s a pity nevertheless, as Snagit is of not much use producing tutorials concerning the work in a sound studio, home or professional. Teaching VSTs and core functions of DAWs will still be great with Snagit, but as it comes to external hardware like synthesizers and so on (and sometimes even microphones) and studio mixers, I ́ll have to use USB Audio interfaces. Does your company produce or recommend solution even for these situations?
Have a great day and a good time!
Rolf
P.S.: and, what about th new version of Snagit, how "hungry" is it compared to my actual Version 12? I ́m still interested in using Snagit for all but the decribed purposes.
Thanks again.

Hi rofilm;

Unfortunately we do not develop any applications that support external audio interfaces, as for recommendations it would depend. Depending on the type of content you are putting out, how you are distributing it. After all, you can capture incredibly high quality audio or video, but if your distribution platform transcodes the content (like Youtube or Vimeo) and alters the audio down to 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, the higher sample rates and bit-depths afforded by external interfaces may all be for naught.

That said, there are a few options for you. One is to use an actual DAW to record your audio only, while using a tool like Camtasia to record the screen, then use Camtasia's studio (or a video editor of your choice) to merge the Camtasia screen recording and the separate audio recording (we recommend using WAV files). You can then edit as needed and publish to your required format.

Snagit 13 has had many improvements in its editor as well as the image capture functionality (no real changes in video recording beyond the ability to now record from the webcam); I would personally recommend downloading the fully function evaluation to see if the newest version of Snagit works for you.

Hope that helps!

-Robert

Again: Thank you for answering that clearly and fast! Great! Thge procedure you described was of course know to me. I used it in my "before-Snagit" times :-). Well, then, my actual projects are all about VSTs and that is fine with Snagit. For the future ones I ́ll have to find the best workflow. Alright then.
And, yes, I ́ll try the new version of Snagit..
Enjoy your time!

We also use Focusrite external audio interfaces (Scarlett 2i2) and the lack of support for them in SnagIt 2018 is a shame. Are there any plans to add this in the future?
