If I restart my Mac it will work, but then at some point it just refuses to record video. Closing the app and restarting it does nothing, I have to fully restart my system. Is there any solution?

BTW -- Using latest OSX 10.8.2 on a Retina MPB, and latest Snagit 2.1.5 (75606). Not sure if it's relevant but I have multiple monitors and connect/disconnect them frequently. The exact error message is a popup that says:

Video Capture Failed
Failed to initialized video recorder process.

Also may be worth noting: When this error occurs, I go to record a video, the normal popup that has the "3.. 2.. 1.." count down appears, but the numbers do not show (it only shows "..." which blinks 3 times).

Same setting like coleflournoy -but built 75606AS and having the same error.

Output in syslog:

Snagit[34249]: *** WARNING: Method userSpaceScaleFactor in class NSView is deprecated on 10.7 and later. It should not be used in new applications. Use convertRectToBacking: instead
WindowServer[96]: _CGXGetWindowOrderingGroup: Operation on a window 0x327d requiring rights 0x5 by caller Snagit

I updated to 2.1.5 and now can not capture videos. No error, all seams to work well, but no video frames are captured. I followed http://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmi... and deleted the 2.1.5 and did reinstall 2.1.3. Same Problem.

Fails for me too. Very frustrating since we had to pay for SnagIt but when it fails to capture video (almost all the time) I have to use the free Jing and it 'just works' every time.

Same issue for me. OSX 10.8.4. SnagIt 2.1.7 (75617). Syslog entries attached. I had just repaired permissions. Is there a fix in process? What is the estimated date?

Thanks,

Rick

I found that it works for me if I put the capture window in my main monitor. But attempting to capture in my secondary monitor fails.

Same here — retina MacBook Pro 2012 15", have my external monitor set as my "main" monitor, and trying to do video capture on the retina notebook screen.

Switching to have my "main" screen be the retina itself means I can get through the recording, though still get a SnagitCapHelper (or something like that) error after the video finishes processing.

Any update on this...I am having the same issue on my external monitor. Should I remove my updated version of Snagit and load an older version?

Agreed -- it doesn't begin recording at all if the area you are capturing is on an external monitor. (Mac OSX) I had to go to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement and relocate the menu bar (drag & drop) from my laptop to the external monitor in order for Snagit to record on my external monitor.

So is anyone from SnagIt support going to respond with any solutions to this? I am using a trial account, and it's asking me to pay money. I am not inclined to do that until I can actually record video without it failing (conveniently at the end, after you've put all the work into the recording which you thought was working, and then is completely lost.)
I remember we had the same reliability issue when we tried this at work about a year ago, so it seems that this critical bug is not being resolved...

I found the solution to it.  It turns out that Snagit is designed to screen capture entire windows (ideally), so if you try to capture external monitors or entire screens, it will cause it to crash or it will fail to start.  To get around this issue, just screen capture from the top of the screen to the bottom of the apps floating at the dock (not right to the edge of the dock).  Basically you want to stop right at where the apps stop and not capture any of the extra portion of the dock (as it may be viewed as going out of their allotted screen capture zone) Same goes for the left and right side as well.  Since I've made this simple adjustment, my video capture has always worked.  It doesn't crash anymore and it always initiates.  On the flip side, I still get to capture the entire screen on my macbook.  Hope this helps.

Hi April,

What version of Snagit are you using? If you're running lower than 3.3.5, see if updating fixes the issue. Versions lower than 3.2.2, especially, can have issues on Yosemite.

I'm having the same problems, but Snagged says that version 2.3 is the latest available... (which is what I'm running).  Ah...  duh, I just realized that version 2.x has been deprecated and I need to manually update to version 3 for $25.   I must have missed that a long time ago...  Whoops!
