Feature request - TechSmith Capture - Save video option

We really need an option to save videos in TechSmith Capture.
Please add this option and you tool will be much more appriciated

At the risk of asking what might sound like a dumb question - what would you do with your videos next? That is, how do you want to share them with others?

If you want to share then Screencast would be one way.  If you want to save it and maybe refer to it OR share it in another way then Save Local would be nice!

Yes, you would likely share them. But to lock people in to one service is a terrible move. From what I can tell, the free Screencast account only allows 2gb of storage, 2gb of bandwidth/mo and only 12mo of storage time for each file. This is extremely limited especially when you are talking about video.

The save local feature is even already built and in the app, since if you don't have internet connection, it shows up when you try to hit "upload". So why not just include this button next to the upload button? I am sure you will still have users using screencast due to convenience, but flexibility is definitely appreciated.

Edit: Regarding that sounding like a dumb question; that has to be the stupidest fucking question ever when used to justify locking users into your service while blocking the simplest feature that clearly people would want.

Thanks for responding. Lots of things-- embed into a Powerpoint, for one. Play locally on a shared screen in a Zoom webinar. Edit (with Camtasia actually; yes, I know well that I could do the video capture right in Camtasia, but it's a complicated situation where Camtasia's not installed on the same machine where I need to do the capture). Also upload to various platforms like Vimeo, Facebook, Youtube.

I primary want to help people with IT related questions, and would attach them to a mail or embed them in a faq

In your case, wouldn't it be best to put a link to the video in your email or FAQ? The video has to live somewhere, and are generally too big to put into emails directly.

On local network, there is no need to send traffic out over the internet when it can be local.

Until Techsmith adds this feature officially, I have 2 workarounds for all of you. First one is to copy the temporary video file manually. On windows, it is found in the Temp directory (hit windows+R and type in %temp% and hit run), and the recording is named _tempRecording-#.mp4

I also found that if you aren't connected to the internet and hit the Upload button, it gives you an option to save locally. So the feature is already there but blocked by someone's stroke of brilliance. You can either manually disconnect your internet when you wanna save, or do what I did and make a firewall rule blocking the app (relayrecorder.exe).

After being pretty disappointed with the features of Techsmith Capture, I went hunting for a better tool.

If you are on windows and are more of a power user, I would recommend ShareX. Tons of customization, fully configurable ffmpeg video capture, save things locally, upload to a wide variety of hosting sites like Imgur, Flickr, Google Photos etc, automatically copy the image to your clipboard, comprehensive image editor for capture etc. Also Open Source.

Fuck Paul's "Why would you want this simple feature, just use our paid products" response. Jing was great though I was never a fan of the swf video format so never used the video capture and Techsmith Capture offering h.264 capture was promising, but not when they pull this shit.

The discovery that the program offers to save locally if there's no network connection is brilliant. I just tried this-- all I had to do was momentarily turn off the wifi on my laptop, and voila-- I could save locally. This is slightly inconvenient, but a quite usable workaround until Techsmith implements this feature.

Sure thing! I'd recommend the firewall route if you want to not have to turn your internet off and on each time. If you're on windows, you can make a rule in windows defender to block outbound traffic for the app (installed at %localappdata%/RelayRecorder/app-1.1.11/RelayRecorder.exe for me) at least assuming that you never want to use the screencast feature.

The only TechSmith products I've used are Snagit, Camtasia, Video Review, Screencast (as little as I can) and Audiate. 

I never used Jing, and I don't think I've had occasion to use Capture, given that Snagit was my introduction to TechSmith almost five years ago. 

I hope TechSmith does a postmortem on how it handled retiring Jing and building Capture as its replacement. I'm not sure I understand the purpose of either, is it supposed to be a loss leader that gets folks drive screencast pro subscriptions? Is it a tool to spread the word about how great TechSmith products are? 

From the announcement, I inferred that had Jing's video format been switched from .swf to .mp4, Adobe's retirement of flash wouldn't have affected it. It seems to me that that last act of development would have given you guys peace and quiet to develop Capture into whatever you wanted it to be and switch the programs. Between Audiate and Capture, there does seem to be a lot of "let's just release things and we'll eventually code the product to meet its stated value proposition." 

And given that Snagit/Camtasia can already save a video file to local disk, I find it curious that the only two TechSmith responses to this idea request have been "what would you need that for??" If developing the OP's requested functionality puts the program too close to Snagit for your taste, just say that. But surely having folks turn off their wifi or and go into the temp folders just to save the video is not a great look.

I second this request. We used to be able to download the video in Jing and I would appreciate a similar functionality in Capture
