Feature Include cursor in capture doesn't work in SnagIt 12.

Can't get the future of including cursor in capture image to work. Tried editing the profile, making new one, various selections, nothing seems to make any difference. Because of this error and missing multiple output SnagIt 12 is no longer my favorite capture & edit program when I'm writing instruction manuals.

Hi Helena - Sorry to hear you're struggling with this. When you create a new profile to include the cursor, are you assigning it a hotkey? By default, Print Screen is assigned to the new capture workflow, as is the big red capture button, so neither of them would initiate your new profile. Give it a try and let us know if you're still having problems.

That truly was my mistake, I'm sorry. I thought Print Screen is the hotkey for any chosen profile and now that I actualy set the hotkey to the profile it works without  any problems. Thank you for your help!

My guess is Helena is not the only user who's had trouble with this. I've been using snagit for 15 years and the upgrade to V12 is the first one that left me confused. "Include cursor" is one feature that "just worked" in V11 and that takes a bit of time and trial & error to make work in V12. Having learnt how to make it work, I still find it less convenient and less intuitive than it was in V11.

In Snagit 11, you clicked the snagit icon in the notification area, selected "Open Snagit", changed the appropriate setting in the snagit window and you were done. In snagit 12, when you click the notification icon there is no more "open snagit". So the first place I looked was preferences. No that wasn't it. Profiles perhaps? Tried profiles->capture profiles->image. No, that starts a capture. Must be profiles->manage profiles then. The manage profiles dialog pops up. I still can't see what I'm looking for, but OK, look around a bit and when you click "image" under "capture profiles", there at last is the familiar "include cursor" option. I enable it and click Save. Surely, when I press PrintScreen now (I only ever use PrintScreen to initiate a capture - not a fan of OneClick or red button), my capture is going to include the cursor? Consternation & frustration when it doesn't. It took me a while to realise that the image capture profile that I have just edited is not the same as the out-of-the-box profile that is still used when I press PrintScreen. Maybe I need to create a custom profile and flag it as default? No sorry, there is no notion of a default profile. Or should I assign a hotkey to my custom profile? I want the PrintScreen key but snagit tells me it's already used by another program. Of course it's used not by another program, as snagit is trying to tell me, but by snagit itself. Hadn't I seen some other place where hotkeys are assigned? Indeed, there's a hotkeys tab under preferences. Change what's defined there as the "global capture" hotkey and PrintScreen is yours again to assign to a profile of your choice...

So I got there in the end. But I can't help thinking one or two things could have been more intuitive. Not just to insure a seamless upgrade experience for a long-term user like me. But also for new users. I was motivated to find a feature that I knew existed and make it work. A first-time user who takes a quick look at snagit might not find out about the feature. Or might not get it to work.

For one thing, I've never used profiles in the past and may never use them in the future. I've always changed the options on an as-needed basis. Snagit 12 now forces me to understand profiles before I can change the capture options. And then there is this quirk that I still can't see the logic of: why is there an out-of-the-box capture profile that, as far as I've worked out, can't be edited and that is not the same as the image capture profile on the Manage Profiles dialog. When I found the Manage Profiles dialog and enabled the include cursor option of the image capture profile, I really expected that to take effect without further ado. I suspect so would 99 users out of 100 - several of them have said so in this forum.

Finally, having got it to work, I find changing options still less convenient that it was in V11. It takes too much navigation through pop-up menus and submenus to get to the Manage Profiles dialog from the notification icon. You seem to understand the importance of making the Manage Profiles dialog easy to get to because it is indeed very easy to get to from the "capture window" (aka the red button). I don't like the red button. There's too much stuff trying to invade my desktop already.

I cannot believe that now I have upgraded to V 12 that I have to go to all this trouble.  I have always thought that upgrades were supposed to make life easier.  Oh well it is 2014.  At least I don't feel like such an idiot now thinking that I was looking but not finding.

AMEN to the above two comments. I have stopped recommending Snagit. I have wasted hours trying different options and fixes. The help files are of no help. This trooper did us a favor, but this is a poor direction that Snagit has taken.

I echo everything above. This has been months now that I've fought with this foolishness and it's only now after expending time and energy to research a fix for it that I'm finding it's a damn FEATURE.

Stop looking for things to break just to have an excuse of creating a new version. Each new version of Snagit I've used has been progressively more cumbersome and less useful. If I could, I'd go back to Snagit 8 and leave it there.

I could have written every word of Jan Buelens's post. It describes exactly the path of my confusion and frustration. I find the global capture completely useless, the hijacking of the big red button and PrtScn key to be inexplicably jaw-dropping, and the profile complexity to be a step backwards in usability and efficiency. I certainly hope we can get back the simplicity in a future release.

+1 to everything Jan & Russ have written above. I just tried using SnagIt 12 for the first time after not needing the program for several months, but having upgraded during that time. Wasted an hour before locating this thread. What a way to make a simple requirement unnecessarily complicated. If someone hasn't lost their job over this, then they should have. My latest Google search - "Alternatives to SnagIt".

Just got Snagit 12. Now 20 minutes in and still haven't found how to add cursor. Why is it not an option under tools or something obvious?

It's found under the Big Red Button's Options. The top profiles are related to the Red Button functionality.
Or when selecting the default  " Print Screen" setting  for initiating a capture.

See, this is the problem. The way you describe it, Joe, is the way everyone expects it to work. But it is NOT the way it works. The profile options are NOT related to the Big Red Button functionality. They used to be, but they're not anymore. The Big Red Button triggers "global capture", whatever the heck that is. To my understanding, there is no way to customize the behavior of "global capture". Instead, these options in your screenshot are what you use to customize a particular profile, such as "Image". But that means that you have to modify and save a profile, and assign it a hot key. You can no longer just click "Include Cursor" or other options, hit PrtScn, and get what you want. That is the problem being highlighted in this thread.

So I am having a brain-dead moment, Joe. I already tried selecting "Image" then clicking the cursor and saving. Nothing. No cursor in my capture. I have tried to process all the comments on this page and still cannot see how to capture my cursor.

How do I get Print Screen hot key to capture my cursor. I cannot use one of my profiles because I have to move my cursor to select "My profile" from the menu - unless I do not know how to use SnagIt.

Is there a way to make my profile the default when I hit Print Screen?

I cannot seem to assign PrintScreen to my profile.

Help!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sandy

Are you aware this only works with All-in-One? Other selections, such as active window or region do not include the cursor, even when it is selected.

Joe: I will try this again. I keep getting a message saying that Print Screen hotkey is in use by another program. I only use one hotkey and it is the Print Screen key. I only use this hotkey in Snagit. Uggghhhhh. Thanks again for your input. Sandy

Thank you for the workaround, and eagerly anticipating the return of the missing mouse cursor, in all my other profiles...hoping the successor to Snagit 12.3.1 Build 2879 is coming soon!

I finally got the cursor to show up thanks to you all... now, how do I highlight it so it is noticeable?  Yellow would be nice.

thanks

Thank you Joe for figuring this out!

It is very difficult to design the option for including the mouse cursor in the capture as difficult as it is in version 12 of SnagIt.

I also had this issue.  After finding the profile configuration, I still found that the global capture interface would omit the mouse.

I eventually resolved it for myself by changing...
1.  the global capture hotkey from 'print screen' to 'ctrl+alt+print screen'
2. binding 'print screen' to my image capture profile, cursor enabled
3. binding 'shift + print screen' to my video capture profile, cursor enabled

Took a bit of work (and some tips from this thread) to get things right.

I have to create a new profile in order to show the cursor? How idiotic! This is a perfect situation of a company adding bells and whistles without simplicity. The management of Techsmith should read Walter Isaacson's "The Innovators" and get an education on how to make a program EASY to use.

Another exemple of bad design after that annoying profile toaster that moves from the bottom of my screen to the top each time I take my laptop off the docking station..

Wow! I finally got it to work but this is unnecessarily complicated, especially since it was so easy before. I'm usually a huge proponent of TechSmith products, but this is inexcusable.
