Folders in SnagIt Editor 12

Does the new SnagIt re-introduce folders in the editor? I am still on V10 because I write books and send my captures to folders based on the chapters. If folders are not there anymore (like they were removed from 11), how do folks do this workflow now? One of my books can have 50 - 100 images per chapter. I need folders to manage them all.

Any ideas?

Hi Paul

No, folders are still absent in version 12. But you DO have an option of tagging. Perhaps that could help?

Cheers... Rick :)

I still find that astonishing... Why were folders removed? It makes little sense to me.

So, can a Profile be made that automatically adds the tag? This is how I get them to go to folders now, but V10 does not have a way to add tags in the profile. Is this possible in V12?

Thanks.

Paul, here's a technique you may want to conceder.
The idea is to eliminate the need to "Name or Tag" each capture. Just assign a Hot Key and go to town.

You can set up a profile for Chapters. Then, have them saved automatically to the folder of your choice.
This would only be a "Single, Named folder".
SO, what you would need to do is change the folder you save too when you start working on another chapter.

Or, you could create Multiple profiles to cover all your chapters.

The video below will show how to set up a profile to do this. The video shows a profile that's set to
" Full Screen Capture". You can just set it to "All In One" or whatever you wish instead.  The video is at least a year old and I created it for another reason. The technique is sound.

I don't know why they eliminated folder view.

Thanks for the video. That is actually exactly how I do it. I have a profile and I change the folder location before starting each chapter. So if I am working in Chapter 10, it goes to a folder named say: CH10 and the numbers increment for that folder. When it is time to start chapter 11, I change the profile to CH11 and they now save there and start incrementing from 1 again. So this part works great. The trouble is getting back to the captures from a previous chapter.
In V10, I can just browse to a folder to see the captures for that chapter. But with this feature removed, I would have no way to see just the captures for a particular chapter. I am not unwilling to use tags instead, but I don't see a way to tag the captures automatically in the profile. Is there a way to tag automatically? Because having to do the tagging manually adds unnecessary and unwanted steps.

Thanks

Paul, If you change the "Prefix" with every new  "Chapter folder" you create. They will appear in your library in the Recent Captures Folder. By Re-naming the Prefix. They can appear organized by chapter. You can also alter the Prefix to indicate what book the chapter belongs with. That way they can all reside in the Library together. And  separate as well.
Selecting a "Sort Type" in the Library will change where they appear amongst other captures.
Hope this works for you.

Meh. That might work, but I remain frustrated that such a useful feature as browsing folders was removed. Doing all these extra steps is just that: EXTRA.

Thank you very much for the helpful suggestions.

Techsmith, if you are reading, PLEASE add folders back to SnagIt Editor...

I agree 100% Paul.
In my experience, when TechSmith takes away. It's gone forever.

Workarounds is all that's left.

To an extent that may be true.

But when SnagIt 12 first appeared it had that gawd awful headache inducing color scheme. And they gave us options to change it based on our feedback.

We also saw a day or two back where that scribble callout was "gone" and Kelly Mullins quickly found a fix to put it back in.

Cheers... Rick :)

This is my take on the SnagIt 12 interface makeover.

SnagIt 12 had just been released and customers were entitled to a refund within 30 days of purchase. Customers were not pleased with the new interface of SnagIt 12.

TechSmith responded by promising a new interface look. They also said that they would be presenting examples for people to comment on.

This is not how it all played out. Long after the 30 days that people had to ask for their money back had expired. They took the black and gray color scheme, and simply inverted the colors. They didn't give the customers a chance to comment, they just said here you go and moved on.

For myself, the black was never a huge issue. I just needed the ability to control the level of black. In a darker room, it would be beneficial to turn it up just a bit.

The gray and black theme, washes out the icons even worse than the black theme. In my opinion, It was the equivalent of putting very little effort into pleasing their customers.

Everyone complained about text capture disappearing, a lot of people have complained about folders disappearing, a lot of people have complained about not being able to capture at 300 dpi settings as part of a profile any longer.

Aside from changing the color theme, what can you cite that they actually brought back as a feature?

I will be surprised if you can come up with anything.

As far as the scribble call-out goes, It's neat I suppose.

However, Camtasia 8 has been out for over 3 years and this is the first time I have seen a request to get it back.

Regards, Joe

I wasn't aware that text capture was gone too. I am just going to stay with V10 I think.
