File Tree missing in V11.4.
Just upgraded from Snagit V9 to V11.4 and I'm missing the file & folder tree. I'm used to taking a quick screen capture, annotating it and drag & drop into the relevant folder - very nice and quick in V9. How do I do it easily in V11 ?
The folder tree was removed in the interests of creating a smoother experience for new users. We are looking at options for providing a .snag preview capability, but I don't have an ETA on that functionality. There is no intention to restore the Folder Tree at this time, but please tell us more about how this affects your workflow!
More specifically on your question mikemj, you can use the File > SaveAs option to place your edited snags in any folder.
Hello b. pedersen,
Thank you for responding to my concerns regarding folder view. I have been a
Snagit loyalist for many many years. I have thousands of .snag files in specific
folders for creating and updating training manuals. It is now EXTREMELY
cumbersome to work in the library since I can not preview the file before I open
in browse. Additionally, I would utilize the very powerful feature "print multiple
pages" in library view to efficiently select and print appropriate pages only.
Please reconsider the impact on long time users that have accumulated many
library files over the years. Thank you.
Image that I have a process which needs to be captured, documented, and comments written for prior to mass distribution within the company. Imagine more than the "recent" buffer can handle being snagged.
Now imagine clicking library
Browsing to the image
Copy & Paste in document
Return to Snagit Editor, only to discover that the selected image has now been added to the recent list and pushed another one into the abyss of the library
Over and over and over and over
What if... you made another VERTICAL tile that was the scrolling library... or better yet...
What if you made the working area a windows based function such that it was a true window wherein the user could size the library and working space?
Working in windows without having to click, open, click, lose position, click, look, click, lose, click, lose, click, lose... from a single window.
Ensure registration is valid through web interface & ensure software key is available
Remove Snagit 11.4.2
Register with key
Open saved files to restore to "recent" pane below active pane
Turn off check for updates
I WANT "FOLDERS" VIEW BACK!.
I find the new 'Library' view very difficult to navigate. I hope enough people complain about this to warrant giving back this functionality. Generally, I have no problem remembering the name I gave a file and where I put it. Now you want me to remember what program I was using and on what date so as to find my files.
Yes the missing folders in 11.4 are a PAIN. I used the folder tabs to open previously moved SNAGIT folders when I moved to different computers at work. I could copy the default storage folder and park them on the new computer, then go to the EDITOR to find them in the Explorer Tree. SNAGIT would then allow me to VIEW and reopen for Editing, then copy and paste into a document. Saving files into specific work folders also would allow some sort of organizing of files for projects. This was sometimes better than renaming the file with a specific project/item..snag.
Save-As will work for newly created files, as Ben Pederson (software engr) said, but what about all the old and LEGACY files that we long term users have used for years. Has the software been so modified that it is now broken and cannot be restored? Going forward, Save-As is OK, but, all the older methods of filings are lost and cannot be easily processed.
I am glad that SnagIt did not get rid of the Applications storage of files (from the Library pull-down). At least, if I use the same application before a screen capture, the .snag files are somewhat organized. Also, files are still stored by years and still fully viewable. I see that WEB Sites are also used, not sure if this was here in 11.3.
BUT, my tree folders are not available. Since we cannot VIEW under an Explorer type window this is really bad. Please FIX for people with older storage concepts!!
Folder view GONE so now I have to assign keywords to all images -- HELP!.
I used to organize my captures/graphics into folders. I upgraded to solve another technical issue and now the folder view is GONE. I'm writing a user manual with many chapters and graphics and now I can't find graphics when I need them. (Grrrr. The date view is useless for my purposes.)
Now I need to somehow apply keywords to a massive number of graphics, but I need to view them to do so. If I have to individually open and assign a keyword to each graphic, that is just ... utterly insane.
New versions are supposed to be IMPROVED. You've removed several very useful functions for no reason I can discern.
Now, if all your files have been created on the same computer and stored in the default snagit folder, can you not look at the 11.4 library either by year dates or even by the application that you were using when you did the Snag? Maybe I'm missing something from user L.Suen above comments.
See my snapshot that I have attached. I'm able to see files from 2013 that were saved in JPG, SNAG or the default file. I save files using .snag especially if I need to be able to go back and edit the annotation. I can view the images either year dates of application What I cannot see is the Folder Tab that was there in v11.3. Now if this is the case, YES, SNAGIT messed up because for me, all I can see in my other folder is the encrypted file name and a date. If I had saved the file with a recognizable name, I might be alright.
Also, I'm not sure how snagit gets the applications associated with a specific file. This would be interesting for future investigation.
On a side note, previously, I could not capture a snagit window. I found a previous post. Open the SnagIt main panel and go to Tools/program preference/program options/ and uncheck the box "hide snagit before capturing". Now you can capture a SnagIt window and show to your friends.
Let's keep these comments going!!
Whilst thread "I WANT "FOLDERS" VIEW BACK!" apparently has been merged into this one,
it looks like as if that -old- thread completely bypassed Techsmith: I don't think Techsmith commented on that one.
Finally.. some comments on the flood of protests reading:
"The folder tree was removed in the interests of creating a smoother experience for new users."
Seems their experience (what experience? They are new! Are they still using trialsoftware or what?) carries more weight than all the protests from the loyal supporters.
Did all the new users complain about the folder view then??
"There is no intention to restore the Folder Tree at this time, but please tell us more about how this affects your workflow!"
Anyway, I went back to 11.3, same as some others I guess.
Why has Snagit eliminated Folders from Library?.
Why has Snagit abandoned Folders in the Library? It is the most powerful tool to manage image locations.
Folders in the Library was one of the best features of Snagit v11.3 - the ability to manage and see what folders the captures resided in. That feature was removed in v11.4. Tagging images with Flags is not granular enough. I had hoped to see Folders back in v12, but sadly it is not.
What was the logic behind removing Folders? What does Snagit provide / suggest as an alternative method?
I think, removing a function is due to lack of creativity.
"for new user, allow to hide this option in settings"
As a user one looks for functionality, and as a test, check the upgrades to next version. That helps you decide in the next move to new versions.
I also tried just moving using a drag and drop or copy to physically move files from my Folders into the Master Snagit Default folders, but I cannot see entries in the actual Library folders.
We can complain about old/new users and how we all want it back (because we were sold into this option years ago and built our organizing of files and projects using this tool. To have Snagit throw it away and leave everyone hanging is downright sad for Software developers. Now if Snagit would really explain why...maybe it is really broken. OR, maybe some outsider can develop some Apps that would tie these together. Lets keep making noise.
What is most frustrating, at least to me: it seemsTechSmith doesn't care to decently comment on all the complaints as to why they have taken it out and why it is improvement for all the loyal users.
These features are just simply taken out. Period. They donot let it in as an option, see how many users are still using them and then decide.
Maybe the development of SnagIt is costing too much, so they wish to simplify the product and removing features are sold as 'improvements'.
As for me, a new SnagIt releases aren't always improvements.
What if.. a (big) part of the old-time users stick to old versions and donot upgrade?
What is their support policy when their latest version is -say- v13 or v14 and oldtime users still stick to 11.3 ?
TechSmith's solution of going back to an old version is really not a sensible way forward - it just closes off access to future improvements.
Come on TechSmith .... are you going to do something about re-introducing a much valued and much used feature of a great product ? Please understand how important the Folders view in Library was to many of us and PLEASE can we have it back !
Next, I did a windows uninstall of the v11.4 that I had. I was not sure whether I could have both versions and how my hotkeys (print screen) would know the default program, so I uninstalled. During the uninstall, I said to "keep the folders for future install"....I also did a Backup of the Editor files, just in-case something went wrong. The Backup procedure is located Editor/file/editor options/advanced/backup or restore button.
After the uninstall, I re-booted my Pc before executing the v11.3 exe file. NOTICE: you are going to need the license KEY from the 11. version that you purchased. Mine happened that I had purchsed v11.2 when it came out and found my email with the key info. If you don't have this key, you could install the trial version and later insert the key. Snagit will load, but have ZERO days, so you REALLY need a key. Even if I inserted my v11.2 key, it worked for the v11.3 update. This is probably true for all major updates, since the dot updates are free.
Now what I see is v11.3, with the Tags and FOLDER listing on the Right side of the screen. I select my OTHER folder and NOW SEE the those captures displayed in the Editor window. FANTASTIC!! I can now bring copies of my work SNAG folders and view/edit.
I also see my most recent 11.4 captures in the TAGS. It is probable that any unique editing that 11.4 had will not work using the 11.3 editor. V11.4+ and even v12 are going to have stuff that you may want in the future, but for me, this is great. Even the video capture works with the icon at the center top of the screen.
For future reference, does anyone here know if you can have multiple versions of SNAGIT on one PC? Any Issues?? Please drop a note here and maybe on another thread.
WRT the multiple version bit. For a while, I did have V12 installed in a different folder and also had V11.4 on the same PC. I believe someone from TechSmith advised that it's possible to do, but only one version may be active and running on the PC at any given moment. (I was getting headaches using V12 so have uninstalled it until TechSmith can resolve that issue with the colors.)
It would seem only logical that minor versions could not coexist. For example, you would not be able to have 11.2, 11.3 and 11.4 on the same machine. At least, I'd be surprised if that were possible. ;)
Cheers... Rick :)
Exactly what is confusing about using folders??? It's one of the first skills you must learn in order to operate a computer.
Can you Imagine if Windows decided to replace folders with Tags and Flags?
I guess we could open the Control Panel, Select > Uninstall, Navigate to the Smiley Face, Click > Remove, Click Delete > removing SnagIt 12 from our computer.
Sorry TechSmith, but converting folders into something entirely different and unnatural ?
Plus you must learn how to use and master it?
How is that Better than having the "Option" to use folders ?
Regards, and surprised you baked this shortcoming into version 12.
