I tried to download the free assets that say i need Camtasia 2018 or later but when i try to download it says i need Camtasia 2019 or later. Where are the assets for 2018? This is misleading and frustrating.

I'm sorry for the confusion-
There are two buttons: one is the "Open in Camtasia" button, which conveniently pulls the asset right into Camtasia for you. However, that magic button only works if you have Camtasia 2019 or later.
Instead, just click the "Download" button, since you are using Camtasia 2018.

So are you suggesting kayakmans Hack is now recommended and endorsed by TechSmith?

haha, no I would not make that recommendation. You do run the risk of hosing your library and causing Camtasia not to run. But hey it's your computer ;)

If your going to suggest  that someone tries  kayakmans Hack .
Knowing theres inherent risks involved.
You should mention that up front.
The person you're advising deserves to be made aware of this.

I wasn't inquiring because I needed to do this.
I wanted rachel.grzymkowski to know where this stood.

https://www.screencast.com/t/RGT8jttdVvy

my Camtasia 9 Library did not get hosed

as previously posted numerous times on this forum, I've done this hundreds of times without incident

as I see it ................ no risk, no reward
in my experience ... no harm, no foul

download/install the free Camtasia 2019 demo

import the downloaded asset into Camtasia 2019

put the asset on timeline in a new, empty project; save the project; exit Camtasia 2019

open the saved project file with a text editor

at beginning of that file, change the line  ... "version" : "3.0",    to   "version" : "2.0",

save the edited file

open that project file in Camtasia 2018

does that work?

if so, add the asset [from timeline] to your 2018 Library

your last post was made right before mine; looks like you have Camtasia 9

accordingly, in above directions, change the version number from 3.0 to 0.5

does that work?

Just to reaffirm, we do not officially support this. It may not work. It may cause bad things to happen. It often does work. It's your computer--when you start mucking around with application level files it's all bets off. I too, as a power user, sometimes *hack* application level files, but I walk into it eyes wide open.

We're also getting more aggressive about versioning our files because we want to add more value into new versions of the product. This is true of Assets, Project files and more. We've got a super reasonable maintenance package that makes it affordable to stay on the latest version of the product--we hope you will take advantage of it.

The *open in* button is a bit problematic. When you visit the website we don't know what version of Camtasia you have installed. Under the hood we're relying on OS level *protocol handlers* to notify the OS that you want to open an asset in Camtasia. The OS makes the determination about what to do when you click on that web based button. If you have multiple instances of Camtasia installed the OS often screws things up (wrong version launches or nothing happens). Downloading directly into Camtasia from these buttons only was implemented about a year ago so it isn't really possible to use the "open in" button in older versions. Again, not knowing what you have installed makes it tough to work around.

We also sometimes make mistakes. If there's a legit 2018 asset advertised and it doesn't work, then there's a decent chance it's our mistake. As Paul mentioned, reach out to us if that's the case and we'll figure what's going wrong (we can often fix a mistake--they don't happen too often, so this is rare).

Hope this explanation helps.
