Free Software today

Hi folks

I regularly try to watch the web site "Giveaway of the day". They offer a different piece of software each day that you can download and install and use at no charge. Today's offer caught my eye and I thought perhaps many of us here may find it to be interesting. It's a photo background remover.

If that sounds interesting, hop on over to GiveawayOfTheDay.com and grab it.

Sorry Mac folks, this one is a Windows only deal.

Remember, the trick is that you MUST download, install, and activate today. You cannot download it, then wait a week or so to install it because it's only good for the day you download it. (Of course, you can use it for a long while beyond today after you do that)

Cheers... Rick :)

Software Orbits has good software and the background remover is great. It is actually easier than Photoshop or Affinity . It is a good one horse solution.

Hijacking the thread .... you can download a lot of stuff with the backgrounds already removed from ...
http://nobacks.com/

Kudos to Rick from the other Rick

Hi Rick...you're pretty much a rock star on this site, so I'm thinking this is a legit deal...
They haven't spammed you with bogus or infected product?

Thanks for sharing it.

LOL, I think "Rock Star" is highly debatable. But I've never encountered issues with what I've chosen to download and install from that site.

Like anything, your mileage may vary. ;)

Cheers... Rick :)

So, Tereza

It's freeware, so you have to be careful when you install it. The website isn't free, nor is the software really.

Always chose custom install. Make sure you "Check or Un-Check" the appropriate boxes.

You could get an unwanted tool bar installed. Additional piece of software.Or, nothing at all. It's depends on the product.

Also, a lot of this software is acquainted. Hasn't been updated in years, that's another reason it's free.
You get what you pay for from this site.

I do like "Abstract Curves" it's a plug in I got for Photoshop several years ago from another Give Away Site. http://windowsgiveaway.com/

It's the same story with that website.

Software that can't be sold or rarely sells so it's offered for free. Or there's other products from the same manufacturer  for sale,plug-ins, extras, etc.

Some of the stuff is worthy, still viable.

However, most of it. In my opinion. Isn't worth the time of day.

32 bit, outdated and ready for burial.

All you can do is download it and try it for yourself.

Look for you tube tutorials. If you tube tutorials on the software are several years old. That's a strong indication the software is acquainted and replaced by something better.

Joe - the "other TechSmith rock star"!  Your answer should be bronzed.  Very valid advice for accessing pretty much anything online.

Thanks to you and both Ricks.

I have some follow up here. Today's Giveaway of the day is.  SoftOrbits Background Remover.

I downloaded it out of curiosity. I knew it wouldn't be better than Photoshop. But If it's good, I'll recommend it.
Well, it's not very good. I intentionally chose a difficult subject to extract. My dog in this image.

You have to color the background and the foreground. This is an old school selection process.

I didn't have to color it in that much, but my first end results were poor so I tried to improve the extraction.
Here is as good as it got.

Which is a poor extraction at best.Terrible actually, you would have to manually erase all around the dog and it would not  look good when your done. There's no feathering to the eraser, nothing. This should be free and or buried in the yard.

Heres another example.

And After,

You would literately have to paint in almost every pixel. For it to work.
And paint every outer pixel to remove.

Here's my dog in Photoshop.

And the lovely couple in Photoshop.

Odd ... I never had that much trouble with v3 and v4 is better. Often you can just put a green stripe on what you want to keep and a couple of red ones  on the area to be discarded and it does a pretty good job.. I have heard that from Photoshop users too although frankly, if you are in a graphics editing program it is easier to do all your stuff there for the most part

There giving away version 3.2 ........So Antiquated for sure if you have version 4. Probably isn't even designed to run on Windows 10.

Here's a image with a solid background, should be a piece of cake to extract.

Here's the end result.

I put several images through this program. I didn't get satisfactory results with 1 image.

Now this image below, is a satisfactory extraction. It's not perfect, but its good enough.
There's no way you could pull this off with that other program. Even with Version 4.
But I'm using Photoshop, it's not a fair fight.
I even extracted his"Hair" hairy arms.
