Free software today

Hi gang

I regularly look at a site called "Giveaway of the day" where each day they offer a piece of software that you would normally have to pay money for, but it's free as long as you download, install, and activate it today.

Today they are offering a free screen recording app.

But Rick, TechSmith ALREADY offers these in SnagIt and Camtasia! Why would I be interested?

Well, here's why. Say you have SnagIt. But you don't have Camtasia. And you really need to create a video demonstrating something SnagIt does. As it turns out, SnagIt can't really record itself. Think of using a video camera trying create a video showing others how you would use the video camera. So you could use this software to accomplish that goal.

Same with Camtasia. Unless you are running multiple versions of Camtasia simultaneously, you can't use the Camtasia recorder to record itself recording things.

So if this sounds like a tool you want to add to your toolbox, head on over to the link below and grab your totally free software!

Sorry Mac users, this one is Windows only.

Happy Monday all... Rick :)

Thanks Rick!  Sometimes I think the best thing the folks here offer is the User Forum.  Your freebie offer is proof of that!

Although I've never really tried to do so if SnagIt and Camtasia cannot record themselves how did TechSmith create the great tutorials?

They use other softwares to and I would say it's safe to bet that their in-house copies of Snagit and Camtasia aren't the same that's pushed out to the public.

There are locked and hidden options we don't get or see.

They don't even use their own Screencast platform for their tuts.
They use Wistia.

You know that you can have more than one version of Camtasia installed, right? 8^>

I've made a number of recordings of C2018 with C9, including both of the recorders ticking away happily on screen.

Rick made the point of Not having Camtasia.
Guess you could run 2 x snagit with different versions.

My reply was directed at what David Voran (and to a lesser extent Dubie) wrote, hence the position in the thread. It has nothing whatever to do with any points that Rick may or may not have made.

Thanks Rick. Looks to be a great little tool if you want to record SnagIt procedures in order to help others. As you know, one of the most difficult things to capture with SnagIt's video capture is the use of menus.

Hi Rick, thanks for the heads up but this time I'll pass.
I read the comments and they're almost as bad as the ones that get put on this forum:)

I was curious about recording using snagit and I found I could  select options that start the video true I couldn't show the button being pressed but I could show the recording section being pressed with the countdown and then even opened the editor and record its menu options.   I have three screens running so it was a messy test but it did to it.

@dubie Techsmith even made a video admitting it couldn't do what they show in Camtasia.  Thought it worth saying also.

You'll find the Windows "Giveaway of the day" Is generally CRAPWARE and not worth installing or downloading.
It's also an antiquated last version or even older version of  the software. The software is generally not worth much and that's why its free.

And for anyone still watching this thread, today's offering is CrazyTalk Animator Standard 3.3  from Real Illusion.

Sure, it's not the most recent version, but you can't beat free.

Well, free may sound good on the surface.

However, CrazyTalk Animator 3 “Standard” is so under featured and generally unworkable. That Reallusion discontinued the Standard version. And no longer offers it for purchase.

You can only purchase Pro or Pipeline versions of Cartoon Animator 4. The new name for the new version of CTA..

I have CTA PRO 3.3 myself. I upgrade from version 2. A longtime user. So I’m well acquainted with the software.

The newest version is not a huge improvement/upgrade. Not in my opinion. Unless you get the $200 Facial Mocap plugin and the Pipeline version.

The Pro version is only $99 for new purchasers these days. Pipeline is down to $200. Pro used to be $200 and Pipeline was closer to $400 then 3. But they don't offer a lot of additional library content or anything else for free with a purchase anymore. They run packaged bundles for "X" dollars these days.

The Pipeline version needs Photoshop and/or iclone 7 to warrant the purchase. Costing more overall as a result.  I think the Mocap is overpriced as well.

CTA3 Standard, doesn’t offer the necessary features that allow you to do much of anything creative or worthwhile. The "Lack Of" timeline features cripple the character’s actions/movements. You cannot create custom or advanced motions. I could go on and on.

I’m not going to try and explain how important all the rest of the missing features are. It would take far too long to cover the basics. Allowing you to form a good understanding, of where I’m coming from. Anyone who’s used the PRO or Pipeline versions. I’m confident would agree with me.

Software that’s free, because it’s Undesirable.

Regards, Joe
