Freehand draw during recording or editing phase

To make my recordings more dynamic and more easily understood, I need to be able to freehand draw over what's being displayed, whether during the recording or editing phase. Currently, the drawing tool is constrained by fixed shapes that can be dropped onto the visual track. Dropping shapes onto the track takes a lot of time and the result looks awkward. I can't achieve the visual connections and cues I need. Drawing a line from one place to another is impossible. I need to be able to freehand draw. If I could use a pen to draw circles, lines, shapes, and arrows, and I could freehand write text--wow! I could do amazing things with my audio-video presentations and tutorials. And the result would be more dynamic and more easily understood by my audience. They could follow along as I draw an oval around a concept, pause to discuss it, and then one by one trace its manifestations in different objects or texts below. These traces swerve around unrelated text or circle them along the way as needed. With each line, my audience would see a line start from the concept and lead to the object--their eyes following along--just like I'm drawing on a document using an Elmo projector in class. Please, TechSmith folks, make freehand drawing available and save me from having to use other tools to get that functionality. I'd much rather stay in Camtasia to get my videos done. Thank you for putting this on your radar.

In version 8 and 9  (can't remember in earlier versions)  you can free hand draw while recording.

Click the record button Then click the pen and then freehand. If you click the down arrow next to the freehand pen you can set some options like color and line width.

If you have Wacom tablet or similar device the pen tool will work with it.

In the editor the best I can remember to kinda simulate hand drawing is to use the sketch annotations.

Hope that helps

Thank you both for this information.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the Record properties to be able to select a pen on the Mac 3 version. The only functionality that appears when Record is clicked is to select an iOS device, screen, camera, and mic. No properties or tools option appears.

However, the screendraw feature does appear in the Record properties of the Windows 9 version. The screencast tutorial was very helpful. Thank you!

The add Annotations feature is too constraining, I'm afraid.

My dilemma now is that my PC laptop is on its last legs, and I inherited a five-year old iMac. My choice now is probably whether to purchase a different video development platform or a new Windows laptop.
