Hi Riyan,

Is the game in fullscreen mode? When games go fullscreen, they take exclusive control over the video device. Usually in that situation, the method we use to record the screen doesn't work. The only workaround I know of at the moment is to put the game into windowed mode, and then record that window.

You could also try disabling the Aero color scheme. Aero does graphics redirection that can also cause the issue you are seeing.

Are you trying to record your game in windowed mode?

You will need to record game-play in Windowed mode. If your game doesn't have settings allowing you to do that you won't be able to record it with Camtasia.

FRAPS has basically no file compression what so ever.
Meaning a 5 minute video is 10+GB...
Bandicam allows you to compress your recordings without sacrificing any video quality or resolution.
Bandicam is a lot better then FRAPS.

That might be true.
I just recorded 5 minutes of video of the new videogame "Mars: War Logs". That gave mig roughly 2,1-2,2 GB instead of that 10+ GB you'r claiming it to be with FRAPS, so... I guess you'r right.

I tried compressing it somemore with Camtasia 8. Is it advisable? And i so, what are the best settings?

It does depend on what you're recording though.
When I tried it with Far Cry 3 @ 1920x1080, 60FPS, The file size was stupidly high after 5 minutes. Bandicam on the same settings dropped it by almost 3/4 while maintaining the quality.

I wouldn't advise compressing with any video editing software as most will reduce the quality of your recording.
If you are intent on using FRAPS, There isn't much you can do to compress already recorded files while keeping the same quality.

FRAPS records in a lossless state. Compressing lossless will result in lower quality.

Hey all

I ́ve tried to record screen, in game with Camtasia, but it doesn ́t Work. I start recording, and everything is fine, but when I open a game, the recording goes all Black screen, and nothing is displayed. The audio is there and working fine when I view the recording, but no visual for some reason.
Am I doing something wrong, or is not possible to record in game with Camtasia
Kind regards

Camtasia cannot record games that are in full screen.
This is because Windows Aero takes exclusive control of your graphics driver.

You'd be wasting your time trying to get Camtasia to record games.
1. You can't change the frame rate at which Camtasia captures in resulting in very bad captures.
2. Camtasia isn't designed to record games. If you record your desktop and look at how jumpy the capture is, Camtasia records at (I think) 15FPS. You need to be recording at (at least) 30FPS.

If you want to capture games, You'll need to download game capture programs like Bandicam/Fraps.
But they are not free.

My opinion: Bandicam is the better capture due to smaller file sizes and better control.

Hey Nate, thx for the reply

I am already way ahead of you and downloaded Bandicam which Works fine. Except one Little thing, the game (BF3) slows down/lagging/low fps for some reason.
Any idea how to overcome this? And when I edit my video, my PC almost dies on me. It drains all the processing power, and sometimes it crashes. Currently running with 8gb ram, that should suffice?
Kind regards

I would suspect that your GPU is struggling with that one. BF3 is a graphic intensive game and Bandicam mostly relies on your GPU for captures. When you place the capture into a video editing program, I suspect that the file maybe be corrupted due to the laggy capture. Try lowering the resolution on BF3 and lower the quality Bandicam. That should hopefully solve the issue you are having.

Full screen games won't record.

So I'm starting up a youtube channel and I go to play my first game (A fullscreen steam game) and the whole video it's me just clicking around on my desktop. I have Windows 8 and there is no theme named aero to delete or change. I heard you have to change it to windows 7 basic (windows 8 basic in my case) but there is no theme called that. If you could help on this that would be amazing.

If Aero takes over the GPU then disable it or put XP:)
