I would simply like to be able to have more than one instance of Camtasia Studio open at any time. I regular create a series of videos for learning curricula and it would be great to have at least two instances open at the same time to be able to either edit both or copy and paste assets from one to another. These are often perhaps one off designs and not required to clutter up the library fro regular use. If I am working on one project and the customer asked for a quick edit of another one, I have to close it out to open the other. It breaks the workflow.

I hear this requested as a feature from time to time. Bare in mind, I'm no coder or programmer at any level.
That being said. I really don't think its possible.WHY???
Camtasia's program files are stored and accessed from an installed location. Some of the temporary save file locations can be configured, some cannot.
If one instance of Camtasia crashes.
What happens to the project in the other running instance Camtasia?
Does the 2nd Camtasia program crash as well?
Do both of these projects become disastrously intertwined.Due to sharing the same file space and save locations.
I've used a lot of video editing programs over the years. None of them offer this functionality. I think that's why.
I don't think it has anything do with over taxing system resources.Although, that's a pretty good argument for not doing it in most cases.
I can open Premier Pro 2017 and 2018 and 2019 all at the same time. Probably more versions if I had them installed. So I know of 3 major releases that can be run simultaneously.
But not 2 identical major releases at the same time. Accessing the same Install Files/Program Files/Whatever it is. Leads to incompatibility issues that cannot be overcome.
If it was simple, or Doable.
Adobe would have done it long ago. That, I'd bet the farm on.

I absolutely agree that at a time when many other applications offer tabbed interfaces allowing multiple documents or projects to be open at once, it seems rather backward that Camtasia doesn't. When you consider that it draws all of its resources for projects from common locations, it seems that this should be possible. That isn't to say that it would be a trivial change; I'm sure that it wouldn't be. However, it would be an incredibly useful feature.

Multiple documents are usually just that. A handful of documents. The numbers are quite low.
A five minute video at 30fps is 9,000 images.
Throw in some callouts, titles, etc. And the numbers increase fast.
Multiple Documents, large PDF's, etc. Pale by comparison.
This isn't comparing Apples to Oranges the way I see it.
This is more like comparing a small Island to a Continent.
But like I say, I'm no programmer. So I can't give you the true technical reasons no video software programs offer this. At least, as far as I know.None do, so theres probably a solid reason for it.

That's a good point; it would take a lot of memory swapping and such, so perhaps it's not practical, especially considering that Camtasia isn't especially stable on a lot of computers as it is. It might push the memory and/or free hard drive space requirements up substantially, even if it was limited to opening just two projects at a time.

another approach is to work with both Camtasia 9 and Camtasia 2018 at the same time
with both versions open at the same time, both having loaded projects, it is possible to copy/paste timeline objects, or timeline selections, from one to the other, using the Libraries
it is also possible to be editing one project while producing the other

This makes me wonder why Techsmith can't allow more than one instance of a single version of Camtasia to run at once. Surely it takes less system resources than running two separate versions of the program.

just guessing here, but running 2 instances of the same version might require duplicate registry entries for the same version; not sure how the Windows Registry could handle that

There are many applications that manage it just fine, so I doubt that there's any insurmountable limitation in a well-designed product.
I don't recall what you have for hardware, but on my previous system I had issues running one instance of CS9. Perhaps TechSmith has done this to reduce the likelihood of hardware limitations causing user problems. That's pure speculation and unless someone from TechSmith chimes in on this issue, we'll never know.

I use a modest i5 Lenovo laptop, 8 GB RAM, 235 GB SSD w/90 free; so far, using 9 and 2018 at same time = OK; I've even had both producing at same time [typical Camtasia tutorial projects]

That's good to know; my current desktop should be more than sufficient. However, I'm not going to buy 2018 just so I can run two sessions. I'll have to see if there's a way I can finagle two CS9 sessions in Windows.

have you tried hot swapping projects in Camtasia 9 so you can copy/paste between them?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Are you referring to what you posted about exporting projects and importing them into the same project?

But that is different than having separate instances of the program open. Though, if you were able to have two projects open in one instance, I don't know why you'd need to have two instances open.

You can even reposition the project panels. That way you drag assets between projects to share them.
If you drag an asset from one project to another. It's the equivalent of copy and paste. So you can't screw up your existing projects by doing this. Its just a simplified copy and paste.
You can switch between projects at will for editing purposes. But that's putting quite a strain on system resources. I wouldn't recommend it under most circumstances.
In this image I have 3 projects open.
I just opened 7 as a test and quit there.I don't envision the need to ever open that many. I'm pretty sure I could have kept opening more.
