Sometimes I select a tool and when I start to draw it, it just drops the entire rectangle—for example—where I clicked and then just keeps dropping duplicate rectangles onto the page and I have difficulty deleting them and making the tool work. I have to quit Snagit and start again.

Another thing: God forbid I have a shape left inadvertently selected on the canvas (forget to deselect after I put it on the canvas to outline something- for example an arrow) and then I click another tool in the tool-selector area on the top right it changes what I have drawn and left selected on the canvas into the tool shape I'm trying to select. That is utterly stupid behavior. Clearly after I've drawn an item—such as a rectangle or an arrow— and now I want to move up to select another tool to use, logic would dictate that's the next tool I want to use and NOT change whatever is already on the canvas to a new shape! This is happening to me way too often slowing me down and it's very very annoying! Nothing in no other Mac application works like this! Why are you "innovating" with tool and the UI behavior?

1. Sounds like a memory anomaly or something (not standard behavior) ... Reboot computer and try again.

2. Mine is automatically deselected ... i.e. I  draw an arrow and it is NOT selected.

I don’t see any settings that would affect any of the above is what makes me thing a reboot might clear them up.

Is this SnagIt 12 or an older version?

Because it sounds like the behavior of SnagIt 12 and older versions.  It was actually pretty common to get that behavior if you weren't careful where and when you clicked.
I started doing a lot of my editing in Photoshop over this issue. "And others"
