High CPU using SnagIt

High CPU on Catalina and SnagIt version Version 2020.1.0 (96026)

I have SnagIt running in the background and it's fine.

But regularly after taking a screen shot SnagIt runs the CPU over !00% causing the MBP fans to kick in.

If I restart the main window it doesn't goto 100% CPU so it seems only to be after launch of a screen shot on certain occasions.

Can you please fix it.

Thanks

Hi,

This is the first we're hearing of this, do you mind opening up a support ticket so our support team can figure out what's going on here?

Hi Luke-
I see the same issue that Graham reports on my Macbook Pro.
On startup, Snagit CPU use is low. Once I capture a screen it consumes 110%+ CPU.
I will also open a ticket.

Hi,

While this is happening, can you run a process sample and attach it to a support ticket? Thanks!

I too am seeing the exact same problem on my new MacBook Pro late 2019 model. I just got SnagIt 2020 and before snapshot CPU is not in play for Snagit. After I snap a screenshot, CPU goestoabout 100% and stays there indefinitely and my cooling fans kick on due to the heat! When I close the Snagit Libary, it drops CPU to nothing again.

Hi folks,

For anyone still seeing this, have you clicked the orange banner in the top right of Snagit to dismiss it? We were only seeing ~4% CPU with that, but maybe there are certain laptop configurations that cause higher usage.

One other thing that may be causing high CPU is if you're coming from Snagit 2019 or older, we now allow you to search in the library for any callout text in your captures, but that requires us to index the captures first. If that's whats going on here, it should resolve itself in a few minutes.

Hi Luke, once I clicked on the “Explore Snagit” banner the CPU problem seemed to go away. Thank you.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled 100% cpu usage in macOS Activity Monitor.

Snagit 2020 uses 100% CPU on macOS per Activity Monitor. It does this even when in the background. Any guesses how to make it stop burning up my lap?

Hi,

That looks a little different, the issue we fixed in 2020.1.1 was in the main Snagit app, whereas you're seeing it in the helper. Were you doing anything like recording a video at the time?

I record a short video, then after 1 hour, the helper process still of high CPU load.

We have a 2020.1.2 update out, i would first give that a try and see if it helps. If not, I would open up a ticket with our Tech Support so they can look into why that's happening for you.

I'm also facing heavy CPU usage with Snagit. Especially with the Helper opening to capture a screenshot when it's running in the background - also when closing the Snagit screen, it freezes a few seconds and then the CPU usage is more than 200%).
Once open the constant RAM usage is also quite high - higher than 1GB (even when not doing anything in the screen)/
Version 2019 was actually working a lot smoother than this one.

Hi Anthony,

The next time you see this, can you open up a support ticket and attach a process sample of Snagit and SnagitHelper? This will help us narrow down why the CPU usage is so high for you.
