interactive content, like hotspots, captions, table of contents, and quizzing, are scripted in the xml files that are generated when you produce to MP$ with controller; the MP4 is just the video, and cannot display interactive content without using the Camtasia Smart player by launching using the html file, and viewing in a browser

the sole exception is when hosting on Screencast.com; only the MP4 is involved because the interactive content is scripted within the MP4 itself, as XMP metadata, but it still requires the SC.com smartplayer to work

The hotspots will only work with all the produced file present and yes play by way of the html file (webpage).

When you produce your video you need to use one of the smartplayer presets or IMO and what most of the experienced users use is the "Custom Production" option.

You also need to have the "Produce with controller" checked to get the smartplayer and needed files
for the hotspots to work.  Unchecked will only produce a mp4 file and the hotspots will not work.

Once produced you will have a folder with multiple files in it.

That complete folder needs to be uploaded to your server and you would then link to or play the video from the   yourvideo.html file. The exception to that is if you use Techsmith's screencast.com. Then you can just upload the mp4 only and the hotspots will work but you still need to produce with the smartplayer options.

Everything said here so far is correct, but the thing to understand is that hotspots are a function of the TechSmith Smart Player and not a function of the video. So when you watch the mp4 in a different player (or video hosting site) you don't have access to that functionality.
