How can I build projects (not produced videos) that have smaller sizes

I need to build projects that use both my screen and an external camera (Hovercam Document Camera). My problem is that my projects end up being very large (~600 MB per minute produced), unnecessarily so as I produce in 480 or 720.

I understand that while producing (exporting) I can drastically reduce the size of the mp4, but for archival reasons I wish to keep the Camtasia projects too, so project size is really an issue.

I also understand the part about capturing the screen and selecting regions to affect project size. The issue seems to come from the camera capture.

  1. Is there a way that I can record off the camera at less than full definition? HD is not very useful to me as I will produce at 480 or at most 720. The camera itself does not have a definition setting.
  2. Is there a way to record full HD and then reduce the size of the raw video file stored inside the project (I believe that is the .trec file).
  3. It looks like HandBrake ca open .trec files, can it reduce their sizes too? (HandBrake only offers saving as .mp4 or .mkv -- could I just rename them?!).

Other suggestions to create smaller size projects or reduce project sizes are welcome!

Camtasia Mac 3.0.5 / Handbrake 1.0.7 / Hovercam Mini 5.
