I have a video recorded with an ipad air 2. 960x720 30fps. the output is a MOV file.
If I just import this file and convert it to MP4 with Camtasia 9, using the same output size (960x720) the same file sized 220mb in MOV becomes 810mb in MP4, even when I reduce the sound bitrate to 56k and the video quality to 75%. That's almost 4x larger. No editing, no additional content added.

Any tips on how I can simply convert to MP4, or any similar format for youtube sharing that stays around the same quality/size?

Try converting your MOV to MP4 with Handbrake.... it's a free encoder/converter you can download and it's really easy to use... I don't have a MOV to test to see what the compression is, but Handbrake does well on most file formats I've tried.

As Dustin said, Handbrake is a good converter.

I personal use FFmpeg by way of the command line and have found it retains better quality and in most cases outputs a smaller files size.

Note the file sizes:

If you are not afraid of typing a little code FFmpeg is a powerful utility not only for video, but audio and images too.

Chances are it might already be on your computer. Various programs use it.

Handbrake though is the quicker (less nerdy) way to go.
I would view some tuts on Handbrake settings to get the best results using it.

Note: FFmpeg will take longer to convert the video than Handbrake.

For me personally though, the trade off is worth it.
