How come Snagit seems to render video faster than Camtasia?

I use snagit to create short video tutorials for my virtual assistants, and I usually record them on snagit. However, sometimes I make mistakes, so i bring them over the Camtasia for minor editing.

I noticed that when I upload my video to youtube using snagit, it is much faster.

When I bring it over to Camtasia, it goes thru the rendering processing bar before uploading to youtube which takes a much longer time.

Why is that?

So, because of your question I’ve been testing SnagIt 12 and I find it’s rendering process to be interesting. 

 I started by rendering a 1080p video using Camtasia. I rendered it to mp4 and it is 15 minutes in duration. I used average high quality settings and it took me 8 minutes to render the complete video.

I opened the exact same video in SnagIt and it produced a completed video in about 10 seconds. SnagIt saved it to my desktop.

 Obviously SnagIt cannot render a video that fast.

So, this is my take on what's occuring . The video is pre-rendered to MP4 while recording with the SnagIt recorder. SnagIt recognized that the tested video was already an mp4 video. It simply gave it the name I was saving it to and placed it on my desktop.

My Nvidia graphics card records the screen in the exact same way. Although it will record at 30 to 60 FPS if you want it to. So basically, the second I am done recording a video using my graphics card the video is complete and ready to be played. This would also make the video ready to upload to YouTube immediately.

I am currently recording myself using SnagIt and dictating this response. I will be rendering that video shortly just to see how long it takes it to produce the compleated video.

Okay, my video was 10 minutes long because I decided to record a few things to make it a long recording. The end result ??? It was produced almost instantaneously, so no actual rendering could have taken place in that short time-frame . Therefor, it must be rendered during capture.

I also cut out small sections of the same video as a secondary test and it took 1 minuet to render and remove those cuts.

  " I don't use SnagIt to record my screen normally" that's why I wanted to run some tests. I’m including a screenshot that shows the final video was recorded at 10 FPS. If you are only recording informative instructions with cursor movements it's tolerable running at 10fps. However, 10 fps is irritating to watch if there is any motion that you must watch and sub-standard in my opinion.

So, SnagIt is faster than Camtasia because you don't need to wait for a video to be rendered before upload can begin. Camtasia records using AVI, it's a higher quality format that is ideal for use in editing. 

Maybe TechSmith will jump in and throw in their $.02 here as well.

Yes, that's accurate. Snagit will encode to MP4 while you are recording so that the video is immediately shareable. (Unless you cut out some things with the playhead, and then we'll need to re-encode the video before sharing) It takes the screen video, your microphone, and the system audio and put them all together on the fly.

Camtasia records everything to different streams. This allows Camtasia users to increase/decrease the microphone volume or remove it entirely while keeping the system audio intact. Or vice versa. It also gives you incredible video editing tools like adding effects, animations, and transitions. Something that Snagit isn't able to do because it's tuned for quick sharing. This flexibility in Camtasia requires an additional rendering step.

Thanks for the clarifying!

Since snagit doesn't really 'render' the videos, does that mean an i3 dual-core processor is probably enough?

That will probably work alright :)  RAM comes into play as well too. Here are our system requirements for version 12.4.1 (notice the higher requirements for video):
  • Microsoft Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit), or Windows Server 2012 R2
  • .NET 4.0 Full or later
  • 2.4 GHz single core processor (2.4 GHz dual core required for video capture)
  • 1 GB of RAM (2 GB required for video capture)
  • 300 MB of hard-disk space for program installation
  • Windows 7 compatible video and audio hardware
  • Video capture on Windows 7 N requires the Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N
