I take a number of screen shots for SOP documents (as well as other things) and normally they are of web pages, or portions of web pages with white backgrounds. If pasting into Word i can add a shadow to the entire parameter of the image that makes it clear where the border is as well as makes it appear to lift off the page.
I've found how SnagIt will allow shadows but it doesn't let me do a shadow evenly around the entire capture. Am I missing something? I'm adding a screen shot to explain what I can do in SnagIT vs what i want to do but can currently only do in Word:

I was playing around with Paul's approach too. I like it, as far as work arounds go.
The size of the image and resolution will dictate parameters but that applies to any effect.
I used a 5 pixel black border with this image and a 14 pixel fade effect.
Theres a little unevenness from top to bottom and side to side.But not much.
I probably should have gone with the gray?
Anyway, one thing I noticed to stay clear of. Too much fade placed over anything with color shows through it the fade effect exceeds more than "X" number of pixels.

Yeah, i can see the issue with too much fade over a colored background. Luckily most of the time i'm pasting onto a white background. Here's the 5 fade and 5 charcoal gray border. There is a little unevenness but it's less noticeable with the lighter smaller border. Also, i really just need a way to distinguish the screen capture from the background and have it not look like a picture frame so this works great for me.

FYI, the quickstyle section is a display issue but when you choose the style it still uses the settings you defined for the quickstyle. The presets resetting are a bug, here is the info i got back from support on those:
Yep, I see the same thing with the preset as well. This is a pretty obvious bug and I will let our Developers know. Right now the best workaround is to use the QuickStyle (even though it says the wrong value, it should still be correct).

Getting weirder. I exited SnagIt so the preset broke. So far, so bad.
So I used the Quickstyle instead, even though it said 80.
Immediately after that I used the preset without thinking what I was doing, and it was fixed.

I was certain there was a centre shadow feature somewhere. It's on callouts, for one. It's not very impressive, you have to look hard to see the effect and it doesn't appear to be adjustable. Strange.
Even stranger is why it's not available on all functions. It has actually been disabled. I wonder why?

I think the key here is , It's never been available. It's not a feature that's been taken away, it's just not available.
Text has centered shadows. Callout, Arrows,Steps and pretty much everything else.
Why not borders? Perhaps because it is an Effect? Part of the effects panel. Not a vector object you draw onto an image.
