How do I add a full picture shadow to image captures?

I take a number of screen shots for SOP documents (as well as other things) and normally they are of web pages, or portions of web pages with white backgrounds.  If pasting into Word i can add a shadow to the entire parameter of the image that makes it clear where the border is as well as makes it appear to lift off the page.

I've found how SnagIt will allow shadows but it doesn't let me do a shadow evenly around the entire capture.  Am I missing something?  I'm adding a screen shot to explain what I can do in SnagIT vs what i want to do but can currently only do in Word:

Unfortunately, SnagIt for Windows doesn't have centered Shadows.
SnagIt for MAC does.

Centered shadows has been requested as a new feature in the past. It has yet to get any traction.

A clunky workaround would be to add a solid border of say 5 px charcoal grey, then use an Edge effect to apply a Fade on all sides.  You'd have to play around to get the overall effect you want.

Oh, that actually works quite well.  And in the edges under fade you can add the border there, this is great, thank you!!

You can save that as a preset so that you can apply it as you take the capture, and assign a hotkey to invoke it.

Actually, it's not clunky at all. :)

Yeah, it's perfect!  I have saved it as a preset, it works great, it'll save me a few steps for every screen capture, thanks again!

I was playing around with Paul's approach too. I like it, as far as work arounds go.

The size of the image and resolution will dictate parameters but that applies to any effect.

I used a 5 pixel black  border with this image and a 14 pixel fade effect.
Theres a little unevenness from top to bottom and side to side. But not much.

I probably should have gone with the gray?

Anyway, one thing I noticed to stay clear of. Too much fade placed over anything with color shows through it the fade effect exceeds more than "X" number of pixels.
"Resolution of image will Dictate This Value"

Just an observation

Yeah, i can see the issue with too much fade over a colored background. Luckily most of the time i'm pasting onto a white background.  Here's the 5 fade and 5 charcoal gray border.  There is a little unevenness but it's less noticeable with the lighter smaller border.  Also, i really just need a way to distinguish the screen capture from the background and have it not look like a picture frame so this works great for me.

I like it so much I'm going to use it myself, never having thought of it before!  You're right, it does make the image pop off the page.  It also adds a radius effect to the corners, which deals with another bugbear of mine.

Nice!

I presume you also turned off the shadow in the Edge effect, to get rid of the heavy bottom shadow?

Again, another inconsistency.  In other places you can turn off a shadow by deselecting the segment.  Here, you can't do that, you have to set the width to zero instead.  Why does it differ? Go figure.

Yeah, Shadow size ZERO is required,  or it offsets a shadow and makes the effect uneven.

You can't actually shut it off.

Oh yes, my shadow was set to 0.  So, i'm experiencing an issue with the preset.  I was updating some drivers and after rebooting the fade size reset up to 80 rather than being 5, i can set it down to 5 and it works until i reboot then it's back to 80 and i have to reset it to 5.  Are y'all noticing this issue?

Edit: You don't have to restart the computer, just restart snagit and the edge fade is resetting back to 80 instead of staying at 5.

Confirmed.  I see that behaviour too.  In fact, my quick styles have also reverted to 80.  This is a BUG, no question

Personally, I would log into my TechSmith account, raise a ticket describing the problem and hyperlink to this thread

As I understand it, filing a Tech Support ticket is likely the best way.

FYI, the quickstyle section is a display issue but when you choose the style it still uses the settings you defined for the quickstyle.  The presets resetting are a bug, here is the info i got back from support on those:

Yep, I see the same thing with the preset as well. This is a pretty obvious bug and I will let our Developers know. Right now the best workaround is to use the QuickStyle (even though it says the wrong value, it should still be correct).

Yeah.... but..... isn't "display issue" just another name for a bug?. :)

Getting weirder.  I exited SnagIt so the preset broke. So far, so bad.

So I used  the Quickstyle instead, even though it said 80.

Immediately after that I used the preset without thinking what I was doing, and it was fixed.

I was certain there was a centre shadow feature somewhere.  It's on callouts, for one.  It's not very impressive, you have to look hard to see the effect and it doesn't appear to be adjustable.  Strange.

Even stranger is why it's not available on all functions.  It has actually been disabled.  I wonder why?

I think the key here is , It's never been available. It's not a feature that's been taken away, it's just not available.

Text has centered shadows. Callout, Arrows,Steps and pretty much everything else.

Why not borders? Perhaps because it is an Effect? Part of the effects panel. Not a vector object you draw onto an image.

I’m going to go off topic here, regarding spam

Paul and Rick were discussing some spam posted in this forum. That post was removed. One of the questions raised was why does the Adobe forums, not have the problems with spam that the Get Satisfaction forum does?

Well, that’s because the Adobe communities are closely moderated. I don’t submit questions to the Adobe forms very often. So if I don’t submit a question for say two months. And I submit a question at 6 AM on a Sunday morning. The question is not immediately posted. It’s accepted and I get a notice that the question is being moderated and it will not be posted until it is looked at. Usually within about 15 minutes the question gets posted.

If I’m active in the community and posting answers and asking questions. I don’t have any problem submitting questions and being moderated. When I first joined the community, all of my questions were moderated. I am now at a level 3 status in the community. There are 10 levels. So Level 3 is actually kind of low. You reach higher levels based on a point system. X amount of points for correct answers. Submitted questions so forth and so on.

Most of the people submitting answers on the Adobe forums are Adobe gurus. These people are so good I tend to not answer questions. I can throw in my two cents, but these gurus can throw in the whole dollar.

Anyway, that’s how the Adobe community keep ahead of spam. A fairly simple formula. They carefully moderate. The Get Satisfaction website clearly does not. On the weekends is a real free-for-all. We’ve all seen it many times.

Regards Joe
