I am trying to enable Camtasia to record the screen and capture the user with the front facing camera of either the iphone or the macbook it is connected to. Can you please advise if this is possible?

Hi Jana.

I don't know how this works for iPhone but, with a MacBook, if you open a New Recording in Camtasia, you should see the recording control window open up, with probably four source buttons, assuming you have all sources installed, plus the record button. At least two of the source buttons should be highlighted green. The buttons should be: the screen, the internal camera, the internal microphone, and the system audio. You should see whichever ones you last used, as being the sources that are highlighted green. For sake of argument, let's assume that the sources you see highlighted are the screen and the internal microphone.

If you then click on the internal camera, it should become highlighted green as well, i.e. in addition to the ones that already are. You will also see what the camera is currently seeing, in a window that pops up. If you then click to record, Camtasia will record the screen, but also what the camera is seeing, on two separate simultaneous tracks. When you stop the recording (by pressing alt-cmd-2), Camtasia will open back up, and you will see the two tracks. Plus, on your canvas, you will see the recorded screen image, along with a miniature camera image superimposed in the bottom right hand corner. You can then change it's size and location, as you wish, in the normal way. N.B. The internal microphone seems to record the audio to the camera track, so you may wish to split the audio out into a separate track for editing purposes.

I don't know which version of Camtasia for Mac you are using, but I don't have the 2018 or 2019 versions of Camtasia; I have versions 2 and 3 for Mac. However, I would assume that TechSmith wouldn't have taken such a useful feature away. Hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.

MJ.

Thank you both for comments :) Please note that using both cameras works for me when I am capturing my computer screen, however when I connect an Iphone I am able only to capture a Screen recording. Front facing camera toggle is disabled in that case.

Interesting. I wonder if it's the same if you have a proper camera plugged in, instead of a phone.
