How do I stop Snag-It from lassoing objects automatically when I try to do an image capture? It almost never selects what I want to capture! I prefer to do it myself.

Check your capture settings.
In Manage Presets under Selection set it to "Region" >> click the gear and set "Select region at capture"
See if that does it for you.

I have done this and the capture method has a mind of it's own. It first wants to capture the whole screen, then if I move the mouse, it selects the nearest window. This auto select feature makes it almost impossible for me to control the selection that I want using the mouse and mouse button to drag the selection I need. What am I doing wrong?

Indeed SnagIt can seem to have a mind of its own when you are using the auto-select. But I've never encountered it insisting that I use what is selected. Even though it may have selected an object, I find it's simple to position the mouse where I want the selection to begin, then just click and drag to make my selection.

I'm guessing you aren't seeing the same behavior?

No, I am not seeing that behavior. The yellow cross-hairs seem to have a life of their own but since I posted this, further testing seems to offer a workaround. So to capture a small area, say a field or two on a web form, I position my cursor at the top left, hit my hot key for capture ("Print Screen" for me), then left-mouse button and hold until the cross-hairs appear, then drag and capture. This seems to work but it's far slower with this version of Snag-It than previous versions.

Just leftclick hold and drag to select your region and lift off mouse ... Tada.

I think so, jasons. I still don't like for it to try to tell me what I want to capture, though! That should be my decision. I realize that I can override it, but it doesn't easily let me do so.
Thanks EVERYBODY for your help!!!

I see now that you're right. It's just all those pre-chosen areas that were throwing me off balance! If I mentally erase them, it does just what you said! :)
