It is unethical (stealing) to download a video that you did not create, or that you do not have permission from the video owner to download.

Aside from the ethics, YouTube is free because of advertisers, and Google doesn't make any money on videos that have been downloaded. I'm all for linking to and/or embedding videos. Why doesn't that suffice? Rules are rules, and as long as Google very clearly states the rules , the ethical user should abide by them. I don't see any grey area here.

Is this a Gray area "Or green area" if you will.

You can download and watch all the you tube videos you want to legally. https://www.youtube.com/red
Just pay Google $10 a month and everything is ethical again. The channels video receives a view count for your views and compensation that amounts to practically nothing. But at least Google collects $120.00 a year.

Have you ever tried to follow a tutorial online? One that required a lot of backing up 30 seconds or so at a time and re-watching.  Searching different areas of a video? Just curious? Because it's a painstaking process when your streaming content.

I'm no lawyer, nor do I play one on the internet. Seek your own professional advise. but,

I believe YouTube grants something called "Fair Use" leading you to download and use copy-righted videos without getting permission from copyright owners in some cases.

** If you download and reuse YouTube videos as material for research, criticism, commentary, teaching or news reporting, your use is fair use.

** Give credit to copyright owners to transfer the protected YouTube video into fair use.

** Some creative video makers download YouTube videos and add original materials to form a new video, for example a parody of hit songs, films for entertainment or non-profit only. It can be taken as fair use.

In addition,  post the statement "no copyright infringement intended" when you use YouTube videos.

Point being... Downloading videos doesn't necessarily imply intent to steal them.

Dubie:)

Within Section 5.1 of YouTube terms of use it states: "YouTube hereby grants you permission to access and use the Service, subject to the following express conditions, and you agree that your failure to adhere to any of these conditions shall constitute a breach of these Terms on your part: you agree not to access Content through any technology or means other than the video playback pages of the Website itself, the YouTube Player, or other means as YouTube may explicitly designate for this purpose."

Even "Fair Use" can be a slippery slope.  The terms above are very clear.

I Think that is only if you plan on profiting from it!  Other wise by posting it to YouTube you have indicated that you want people to see and proliferate it! Else the mere viewing of such content could be considered a violation and as such the service becomes useless to law abiding citizens -- you know Republicans!

On the outside chance all these nice experts are not understanding you question See if this what  you need.
  1. You used Camtasia to create a video you want to share on YouTube.
  2. You want create a link to your video to share on a newsgroup or forum.
  3. Open any web Browser and go to https://www.YouTube.com.
  4. One your in and signed in, click my channel.
  5. Locate the video you just uploaded.
  6. If marked Private Change to Public.
  7. Now  look for create link and create a Public link any can use to view your video.
  8. Once created copy the link URL. Now go to the forum /newsgroup/Facebook/whatever and paste the link.
Now you have created a shareable link. After you have successfully upload a Video you will receive a notice from YouTube. If you are going to share video's and you want to impress with image quality, Share using vimeo Instead. I've found YouTube Videos fuzzy and out of focus. whereas, Vimeo video look almost professional.  In Camtasia Vimeo Share is a complex operation and  requires conversion Mpeg4 first then Uploading, YouTube all you have to do is click on Share and go to YouTube.

If you would like to download a YouTube video that you created :
1. Log into your channel
2. Click the Creator Studio button below your identifier in the top right corner.

3. Click View All

4. Click the arrow to the right of the edit button beside the video that you would like to download.
5. Select Download MP4 from the available options. (It used to be that you could download only 2 of your videos per hour, but it appears that this has changed. I'm not sure what the hourly/daily limit is now, but I was able to download 4 of mine one after the other)

***You will not have the option to download a video that has any copyright hits, even if it is for something that does not give you an official ding. (such as music that is allowed to remain with ads attached)

I've used this online one lately. Paste the video url in the field and bam. Don't bother with the software version offered, just use the online downloader.
