How to join clips after deleting portions

I often end up removing many small clips, such as dead spaces in the editing process. How do I rejoin the pieces so I don't have so many individual clips--which makes zooming difficult?

You make the process a little more productive a couple of ways depending what you are aiming for.

When making your cuts use "Ripple delete".  That will close the gap from the cut automatically.

Make your selection of what you are going to cut and right-click on the selection and chose
Ripple Delete or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Delete.

Doing the above will leave a split which is what you want if you are going to apply a transition from one clip to the other.
If you want the clips to be joined as one with no split(s) automatically you can set the preferences (under the top menu Edit tab) to "Enable auto-stitching".

If your editing will need splits in some place and not in others
Than leave the "auto-stitching option Unchecked, use ripple delete and than as Thomas posted above you can select adjoining clips and then right-click on one and chose "Stitch Selected Media"or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+I   You can also find "Stitch Selected Media" under the top menu Edit tab.
