How to regain v3's drag-drop function?

When I (used to in v3 SnagIt) drag a thumbnail from the bottom of the Edit window to drop it into another application  -- like a conversation in Skype, Slack, or Messages, or in between a couple paragraphs in an email -- it would be a small, 20% opacity or so graphic that travelled with my cursor. That was fine, because I needed to see "the drop zone" clearly ...  and when I'd release the mouse button, the graphic would be regular size, 100% opacity.

What a fantastic feature ... when I just need to quickly share an image, no need to Save As and name an image and a format and choose a location on my hard drive and then find that image and drag and drop it. Instead, capture the image, add a callout, drag and drop the thumbnail.

Now in SnagIt v4, that's gone. When I drag from the thumbnail area, I get the full-size image attached to my cursor, even if I had captured the full screen! Making for a truly bizarre experience. I work full-time on a 15" laptop and have to go through lots of maneuvers to see which app and which window is active while I'm dragging. The image is also about 85% opaque. So now, most of the time I can't see the drop zone, so the function is gone for me.

Is there a preference setting to fix this? I can't find one. Thanks!

Hullo amarie,
Short answer: nope there is no pref for that, but we get your point, and we'll look into it further.
Longer answer: the change was deliberate to better facilitate a different workflow. Specifically, our designers were trying to make it easier to combine two images in your tray. Imagine you've taken two captures back to back, and you want to combine them into a single image. You simply go to the first image, and then drag the tray item for the second image up onto the image you are already editing. The full size preview of the second item allows you to tell exactly where that second image is going to be placed when combined with the first image. That's what we were facilitating with the change...   Now, that having been said - we did not adequately consider the case you describe where you are dragging outside of snagit and the larger image actually makes that more difficult.  In your case, the larger image doesn't provide any additional value, and as you've observed in many cases it actually makes things worse for your workflow.
Therefore: we are logging an issue to record how we've impacted your workflow. What that means is the developers will talk to the designers and we'll see if we can design some sort of hybrid solution.  Perhaps we can revert to the smaller image once you leave the Snagit window...  So...  we'll consider how we've impacted your workflow and discuss if we can remedy the situation. What I cannot promise is what the outcome of the discussion will be... or even if we decide on a remedy, when that would be available.
I'm truly sorry we've negatively impacted your workflow.

What a thoughtful and timely reply, thank you! Disappointed it's not a pref setting, but I can be patient. I've demonstrated my v3 drag and drop "workflow"  to many audiences (I'm one of your in the field evangelists ..heh) and I always hear a loud "whoa!" reaction. I have once or twice needed to merge 2 screen caps as you describe, but far more often I'm dragging the thumbnail to another app. I was going to suggest you make it so that users could use a modifier key or preference setting to toggle "big/little proxies" but  the method you describe -- when the proxy leaves home, it gets small and transparent -- would also work well, and be quite elegant I think.

FWIW, I use the 'drag out of Snagit' FAR more than the 'drag within Snagit'. So let me +1 the request to reconsider this change.

THANK YOU for fixing this! I don't know which update did it, but it must've been recent. I'm on 4.05. Just noticed it today!  Unfortunately it doesn't look like what Doug was hoping for ... the "hybrid" solution, where the preview would be large inside the SnagIt window but small outside of it. That would've been cool too.

Due to a legacy technical issue, the hybrid solution I described was more work than we could justify for a maintenance release. So we restored the old behavior until we can make the experience good in BOTH cases...  maybe someday.  :)
