Would like to avoid an extra step at the end of capture to select between picture and video.

Setting the default to image can only be done in the new capture window. This applies to the red button in the new capture window, and any hotkey you set with it. The red button in the old capture window cannot be reconfigured.

MDX, you can simplify screen captures by following the steps in this screenshot:

  1. Open the snagit menubar icon.
  2. Select Image (assuming you want an image capture
I didn't number in the picture, but I used 'region' as my selection, which lets me draw a rectangle over the area I want to capture.
  3. add the above as a preset.
  4. give the preset a key command.
A few notes: Camtasia mac used to use Shift-command-C as it's shortcut.
At some point, I think MacOS/OSX defaulted to assigning Shift-Command-C to something else.
I unassigned that in system preferences->keyboard so I could assign it in Camtasia.
After doing all the above, Camtasia 4 works pretty much the same as Camtasia 1+2 did for me.
