My husband recorded video off his ipad, but the video is upside down. How do I rotate it 180 degrees so the video is upright?

Hi Tiffany,
If you are using Camtasia Studio 8.0, it's very simple. If you click on the video in the preview window, you should see a rotation drag handle next to the center point of the video (It's a green dot). You can grab that handle and use it to rotate the video around. It should snap at 180 degrees.
Note that video rotation is only available in Camtasia Studio 8.0. Older versions do not support this feature.

Hi Scott.
Here is a link to the version upgrade page: http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia-stu...
And here is a link to download a free 30-day trial: http://www.techsmith.com/download/cam...
There really are tons of new features in the newest version. If you want to see some of them in action before downloading a trial, check this page out here: http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia-wha...
Hope (at least one of these) helps! :)

here the steps used on a PC with Win7 64 bit using Camtasia 8.0.3. The image was 480x360.
After importing the center green dot was used to rotate the canvas. (See the video Josh provided for details.) Unfortunately, this did not rotate the image.
Clicked on the dimensions button (top left on preview screen) to change dimensions.
Disabled "Keep Aspect Ratio"
Changed width from 480 to 360
Changed height from 360 to 480
Note: If the center and border dots do not appear click the "Toggle Pan Mode" (hand icon) (top right on preview screen)

You have to first add the video to your timeline. Right click on the video in your 'clip bin' and select add to timeline

I am usic footage from an iphone and when i rotate it to the correct position, the video is restricted to the same size, so half my torso is cut off!

I was really glad to find this feature! I'm experimenting with flipping a class, and needed to insert part of a lecture in which I normally build up a diagram on the whiteboard, rather than relying on Powerpoint slides. So I bolted my webcam onto a tripod, sat it on my desk and drew the diagram on a piece of paper - but the webcam was, of course, inverted w.r.t. my drawing and the video was upside down. The camera driver couldn't right the image, so this feature saved my bacon and made the recording possible.

Cathy, the video at http://www.techsmith.com/tutorial-camtasia-8-canvas-in-depth.html shows how to rotate the canvas in Camtasia. Alternatively, the Windows Photo Viewer has buttons which will do clockwise or counter-clockwise 90 degree rotation with a single click - but that's for pics only.

I have to admit, although I am on Camtasia 7, I got frustrated that Camtasia does not see the video the right way around like some other apps. So, I decided to use Microsoft Movie Maker to produce the video. I would have preferred to use Camtasia ... oh well.

Was it a vertical video?
If so, it's worth noting that you may be suffering from Vertical Video Syndrome. :(

If you can play the video on your computer you can use the Camtasia recorder to record it in the upright position. Then edit in in Camtasia.
Camtasia records in a nearly lossless format. All that really means is your video will not lose any quality by recording it from your screen and then editing it.

Hey, Joe, using Camtasia Studio 8.0.2 & would like to know if you will provide the menu path to make "Record the screen" record something that is horizontal in an upright position. I don't see any orientation tools in the "Record the screen" mini-window that pops up. Thank you!

Starting with version 8.4.0, iPhone / iPad videos should appear in the correct orientation without having to rotate on the canvas.

It is weird as the video plays the right way up in Windows Media Player. It is just when we bring it into Camtasia that it turns it up side down in version 7.

That's because the video was recorded with specially added "exif metadata" that describes how the video was recorded initially.
As Kevin pointed out above, Camtasia 8 understands this and properly orients the video. Camtasia 7 must be unaware of how to deal with it.
As I see it there are two options.
1. Play the video on the computer and record it with Camtasia 7. (I think Joe Morgan suggested that)
2. Upgrade to Camtasia 8
Cheers... Rick :)

Hey, Rick, sorry to keep beating this topic, but I'm befuddled. Scenario: HTC Thunderbolt phone taking fairly decent video, but some vertical recordings come out horizontal in Windows. Great quality, but orientation's horizontal. I'm using Camtasia 8.0.2. I've tried using the original video & flipping it in Camtasia, have also tried recording screen & then flipping in Camtasia. Neither one gives me the quality the original had. Obviously, the Produce and share feature shows "up to 720p", so perhaps that's my bungle: I'm recording in 1080p/HD & Camtasia just doesn't go any further than 720p? Appreciate your guidance, sir!

The media has to be selected for the handles to show up. You can select the media by clicking on it in the timeline or directly on the canvas.
If it seems that you can select the media, but the handles are still not showing up, there may be something weird going on.

I'm not disagreeing that One button functionality is hard to beat.
I use a lot of media editing software and the need to rotate a video is one I just don't encounter very often.
Rotating a video by degrees is a fairly quick operation in Camtasia as well.
You can make precise adjustment in the "Visual Properties" panel.
See Images Below, Click to Enlarge.
Type in the desired degree of rotation.
You can also grab the rotational control handle in the Canvas Area.
Once you've left clicked on the "Rotation Handle" you can move your cursor far away from the actual handle and this gives you a lot of precise control over that rotation.
I appreciate one button functionality and maybe you should post this as an "Idea" and start a new thread. If the idea gets traction you may even see it added in the future by TechSmith.
