You can import your MP4 to the timeline ... then produce to AVI. Quality may be lacking somewhat, but it will work.

You may also refer to this step by step guide to batch convert MP4 to AVI

After tried, it really works great.

And I find it also can batch convert AVI to MP4.

It also can batch convert MP4 to WMV, ASF, FLV, MPEG-2, MPEG-2, MOV, WTV, MKV, WebM, etc.

It even can convert all kinds of video files to AVI.

Moreover, it can convert video or audio files to MP3, WAV, WMA, M4A, AAC, DTS, FLAC, OGG adn etc.

There may be some limitations such as the file length of the MP4, etc. Outside of my suggestion, can't think of a better way in CS. Might have to look for a converter of some type.

The Reason Convert MP4 to AVI

As we all know, MP4 and AVI are two of the most popular formats nowadays. Since MP4 and AVI are compatible with different devices, here we list two main occasions that cause people to convert MP4 to AVI:

For Mac users: Have a bunch of MP4 files in hand and want to share them with family, friends who are using Windows and try to play them on Windows Media Player, etc or send them to clients who prefer AVI format, or make a PPT for a report with these MP4 video, etc. In these cases, people have to convert MP4 to AVI since AVI has a better compatibility with Windows, PowerPoint, etc.

For Windows users: Download some MP4 movies from popular video sharing websites, or record some video in MP4 format on a wedding, a birthday or a commencement with iPhone, iPad, etc, or get videos with .mp4 extension from friends, etc. To play these MP4 video on Windows, the best solution is converting them to AVI format which is Windows-friendly.

In a word, in order to play MP4 clips on Windows, Windows media player, PowerPoint, Windows Movie Maker, Blackberry, etc, a widely recommended solution is converting MP4 to AVI with professional Faasoft MP4 to AVI Converter Mac and Windows.

Hope it can help you more or less.

Both the version 8.4.0 of Camtasia Studio (windows version) and version 2.8.0 of Camtasia for Mac record Camtasia video with TREC format, while the previous version of Camtasia Studio records Camtasia video with .CAMREC format (for Windows) and .CMREC format (for Mac). You can directly export TREC file to MP4 with Camtasia Studio. Just import TREC into Camtasia first. You will see the RREC files are in the Clip Bin and the Timeline in "Project Edit" Window. Then click "File" > "Save Project" to save the project file. Click the "Produce and Share" button above the Clip Bin area to launch the production wizard. Expand the menu to see a list of production options. There you can select MP4 format for output. Then you a third-party video converter such as Pavtube Video Converter to convert the Camtasia MP4 video to AVI to other popular file formats.

Better than to download any plugin or software that will slow your computer. I'd recommend using online service such zamzar, Acethinker Video Converter, mediaconverter, etc. They are free web-based application to convert videos, you don't have to install anything.

I don't have much idea about Camtasia but I often need to convert mp4. I mostly use website like zamzar or Convert.world.
I would recommend Conver.world - It has such a great interface and does the job in No Time. Website URL: https://convert.world

Hope you get your things done! :)

You can find the Camtasia's built in conversion application.
Take Camtasia 8 for example
1. Import your MP4 file to the timeline.
2. Go to "File" and click on "Produce and share"
3. Choose "Custom Production Setting"
4. Choose AVI as the Output format and then just continue until conversion.
For further instruction on Camtasia MP4 conversion you can refer to this article:

How are you able to import an MP4 file in to the timeline? I am using a PC and am not able to import MP4s. I am not able to access other external websites to convert the file either since this is a work PC.

generally, if you cannot access an MP4 in the file system, you can't import it into a Camtasia project

as a workaround, if you can play the MP4 on your PC, use Camtasia Recorder to capture the playing MP4 [capture sound w/system audio]; use that capture in your project

You don't need to convert .trec to .avi. Unless you are editing the video.

.trec file are recorded to .avi.
.trec is a container format containing cursor information, microphone audio, system audio, and webcam video.

All you need to do is extract the contents to a folder of your choosing.

You need the .trec file to be in the Camtasia Editors "Media Bin". Then you right click it and select "Extract Recording Contents"

Regards,Joe
