Hello kent. Can you provide a little more information about which version you are using, is it the Windows PC or Mac version, your computers specs for RAM, Soundcard that is installed, etc. The more we know the easier it is to try to give any help. Below I have posted a site from TechSmith that might help you find a solution and you can read more about issues found. If you have a Realtek Soundcard I would try updating the drivers from Realtek and see if that helps.

Let us know and thanks for posting.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem. I am on Windows 7, and have Camtasia Studio 7.1.1. I do not have a Realtek Soundcard. I have a "High Definition Audio Device" by Microsoft.

I have 2GB RAM, 32-bit OS

Thanks,
Maryanne

Hello Maryanne. Can you tell me or upload a screenshot of your Recording Devices? You can find this information in Windows 7 by right clicking on the little speaker icon in the taskbar (right hand of screen) and going to Recording Devices and it should show you what your default recording device ( Microphone) that is listed. This will help give more information. What type of microphone are you using to record your audio using Camtasia Studio and does your audio recordings work with other audio software like the Windows Sound Recorder or Audacity? Let us know and maybe we can find a solution or offer some advice.

Thanks for posting and have a great day.

Hi Fred, I'm using a Plantronics Headset to record. It has worked in the past with Camtasia. This is the first time I'm using Voice Narration. Also, I have used it with Audacity on this same computer. Thank you for any advice you can provide.

Maryanne that screenshot looks like it came from the device manager. I was referring to the Recording Devices enabled on your system. I have a couple screenshots below:

Then you will see this option (screenshot below):

Then you will see this (screenshot below):

With the image directly above this make sure you have a checkbox in the Show Disabled Devices and the Show Disconnected Devices (This option will popup when you Right Click on any of the devices seen in the window). What does it show for your Microphone? It should be your USB Plantronics Headset if it is configured correctly. Just make sure you are under the Recording Tab at the top and not the others (Playback, Sounds, and Communications).

Let me know if this helps and what you find out from trying this. Post some screenshots or make a small video and upload it to screencast.com account like you did before if possible. Thanks for getting back with me on this and posting. I hope this helps more. Have a great day.

Hi Fred,
So sorry I haven't responded. I ended up restarting the PC and going with the built in mic. It seemed to work. I will try your detailed instructions and let you know how it works.
Thanks very much.

Your welcome Maryanne. No need for apologies. Let us know if the above instructions help and if you get your USB Mic working. I can tell you that you will achieve better sound quality from the USB Mic over the built in mic. I will look forward to hearing back. Have a great day.

Hello. I am also having the same issue. I am on Windows 7 x64. The input level of the microphone is being detected but the other options are greyed out. I have version 7.1.0.1631 installed. I am using a headset mic from Cyber Acoustics. I am using the microphone and headset jacks on the front of the computer.

Renee I am assuming that your headset mic/headphones just have a little plug 3.5 mm or 1/8th inch jack ends. If you are just plugging that jack into the Line-In then it will use that for the recording of your mic and playback should come through your headset. I recommend USB Mics as they seem to work better for me and maybe not others. It is just a personal preference for me.

You should be able to record voice narration with the mic you have hooked up. Do you have a video on the timeline or anything? Maybe you can give more detail of how and what you have going on for the project you are working on. It should show up and work if you have something inside of your timeline. Let us know and thanks for posting. Have a great day.

Fred- Yes I have a video that I recorded as a screen capture and it is edited with title slides, transitions, frame extensions, etc. It is a training video for a product of ours. I am now trying to record a script narration in the Audio 1 line. I have previously done this on an XP machine without issue. However, I don't have access to a real XP anymore- only virtual, which don't seem to recognize the physical headset plug in at all.

Yes, the headset has two 3.5 mm plugs, one for the microphone and one for the headset that I am plugging in to the front of the box. Unfortunately this is the microphone I already have available through my company- I don't have a USB mic available.

Can you explain why the computer is able to recognize the mic (i.e. it will pick up sounds in the level indicator) but the narration options are still greyed out? I have made sure all of the sound drivers are updated, updated Camtasia to version 7.1, etc.

I am not sure why this is happening unless it would have something to do with using a Virtual System which I cannot say as I do not use one. You might want to try contacting TechSmith Support and seeing what they have to say as I have tried to re-produce this problem with the same setup except the Virtual System and I could not get the same results as you. Let us know what they have to say and maybe one of the TechSmith Employees will jump in here and have some suggestions to try or another user. If I figure anything out in the meantime I will post it back here.

Since this is the 1st result on Google when searching this problem, I thought I might add a little input, in case it helps. I had this same problem just now, and it happened after recording dozens of Voice Narrations on prior projects. Nothing on my PC changed, so it was very random & nonsensical that this happened.

In any case, all I had to do was shut down Camtasia & restart it. It worked just fine :) Also, there is a thread here on the official site that may be useful if restarting the program doesn't work for you: http://techsmith.custhelp.com/app/ans...

I am trying out the 30 day trial and the voice narration section is faded out (can't press the record button). That would be the main reason for buying this program so I need to try out this feature. Do I need to do anything before being able to record?

I had this problem because I plugged my microphone in after I saved the project. I closed Camtasia and restarted it with the microphone already plugged in, opened the project and the voice over window was ungrayed.

Camtasia + Realtek = not love!
Hi, I'm having the same problem.
Win XP (SP3) 32-bit, Camtasia Studio 7.1.1, Realtek ALC883, RAM 2GB.
Audio driver is the newest.
The microphone works in Skype etc.

Oh, my God! This problem with Camtasia since 2006!

Same problem here. The strange thing is that while all inputs are disabled, the sound level indicator does respond to sound. It can be deduced from the screenshots that it is the same for others.

The good news: restarting Camtasia solved it.
