I want to customize the Ribbon Interface in Snagit to add a custom tab

I have a wide screen and could easily have ALL of the items from the Tools and Image tabs shown on a single ribbon tab. And having the items from the Tools and Images tab in one location will give me a significant productivity boost. However when I Right Click on the Ribbon the only customization option I have is for the Quick Access Toolbar.

How can I customize the Ribbon interface and create a custom tab with ALL of the tools available?

It's not possible.  Add the tools to the toolbar and minimize the ribbon.

While I thank you for the quick response. The answer does not address my issue as the QAT (Quick Access Toolbar) is not meant to handle the large icons and live preview style dropdowns that are used in the SnagIt ribbon ui. Most software companies that use a ribbon interface do so to create a familiarity with Office products dating back to 2007, yes that is 7 years ago.

Allowing the us to customize the ribbon ui could be as simple as the TechSmith software engineers flipping a checkbox to allow us access to the built-in "Customize Ribbon" interface. Just like they flipped the switch on the one for the "Quick Access Toolbar". By limiting customization the designers of SnagIt assume they know and understand every possible use case for their software and feel that splitting up the icons between Tools and Images are necessary for the best possible user experience; of course I disagree.

TechSmith - Please allow us to Customize the Ribbon in the next maintenance release of SnagIt version 11.

I would love it if we had an ability to customize the ribbon. But I'm not sure I'd go so far as to claim it's as simple as flipping a switch.

However, TechSmith is one of the glorious few software companies that I've seen actually listen to their users about such things. So if it truly is as easy and simple as you are claiming it to be, perhaps it will happen. Only time will tell!

Now that is a big pile of crap!  The web is full of user's comments on the quick styles and ribbon disaster.  Techsmith is more concerned about getting new customers that improving the product for existing customers.  The idea is to make Snagit simple.  Simple does not mean efficient.  Really disgusted by Techsmith.

The designers at TechSmith, like the ones at every company, do make design decisions and have done so here. Customizing the ribbon by the user is something that they have chosen is not yet significant to their customers.  It would be nice to have a ribbon that could be modified but it's not available at the moment and if the toolbar doesn't fit your needs either then I'm afraid the only possible thing with Snagit is to suggest that it be done and see how many people echo your sentiments here.

Hi Brian - thanks for using Snagit and for taking the time to suggest how we could improve it for you! I changed this topic from a question to an idea so that we can get a sense of how many other users would appreciate this customization ability.

Personally, I think it's a super idea but I also don't know what's involved in making it so or what implications it would have in terms of adding complexity for new users.

Thanks! I hope it is a simple or relatively simple flip of a switch/flag in the code to turn it on.

I understand the concern for new or novice users, in that case bury the option to even have the ability to customize the ribbon deep in the preferences panel. And have a "Reset Ribbon to Default" button or checkbox. That will minimize the risk for TechSmith having to support 1000x variations of the ribbon. Ideally if you could save a custom ribbon layout you could have a "Default" that you could either switch to during tech or support follow ups and custom ribbons for one or more people who might use the same computer; or to switch from "Yours" to "Default" while talking to someone from TechSmith.

I can live with not having an ability to customize the ribbon if it was more scalable. For instance when I open the Editor up wide, there is no reason why the styles gallery couldn't spread out across the ribbon. To limit it 4 styles is really a pain, in that now I have to click the Style Gallery dropdown to access the style, stamp, text box, etc. that I would like to use.

I really hope you consider scaling of your groups. I know that the decision to keep them all grouped and small was because you want one version for both Mobile and desktop - but really, I would hardly plan on doing much more than capture and add some text on a mobile device, but I do serious documentation with SnagIt on a desktop and use multiple objects to mark up an image.

I can't believe this - I just upgraded and it appears that there are fewer options in the ribbon in the current release than in previous releases. What is the point of having all the functions hidden - they cannot possibly be added to the quick access toolbar. This is just brain-dead design.

customizing ribbon in snagit.

I hate that you changed the ribbon and I can't change it back. Let us customize it like you can customize the quick access bar.
I may download and revert back to the previous version of snagit which means its less likely I'll upgrade again.

I found this thread because, like everyone else, I wanted to customize the ribbon. I'd like to voice my desire to have this option. I think that some of the folks here have some excellent ideas.

Keep in mind that for every person here who voices their opinion, a hundred more may have read this thread and also agree....... they just didn't post it.

Please allow ribbon customization!!!

I had a big rant, but I just deleted it, as it seems that they don't seem to care.

Yesterday I received an offer to upgrade to SnagIt v12 for $20 and I'd like to advise Techsmith as I stated in an earlier post, they've messed up SnagIt and I am NOT interested in paying for any upgrade which doesn't give me the ribbon customization. I'm done with paying for upgrades when it should be obvious to all in this post that Techsmith is ignoring us; my dollar$ are walking...no more upgrades!

I agree 100%. There are options now both commercial and open source to replace SnagIt. The only reason to continue to use it is if they are improving the user interface and ease of use.

And a second attempt to separate me from my $$ - http://www.techsmith.com/snagit-upgrade.html?utm_source=cust&utm_medium=email&utm_content=sn... Sorry TechSmith, no more love coming your way until we can customize the ribbon interface...and that's a shame because I've been a user for 8-9 years and my wife longer than that and I've sold numerous friends and co-workers on SnagIt, but you had to jack around with the interface until I can no longer support the product. Starting my search for alternatives...adios until?

same frustration here. The ribbon is crippled and I want to customize it! The Drawing Tools all collapsed in one button is SO counter-productive.

Hi folks

What you *ARE* able to do is to create your own little ribbon. If you look typically at the top of the SnagIt editor, you will see something called the "Quick Access Toolbar". If you right-click it, you see an option to change where it appears. I like mine below the ribbon. Also when right-clicking, you see an option to customize it. And there you are able to add any of the commands you like.

Cheers... Rick :)

I think most of us are aware of the Quick Access Toolbar - but what we want is the ability for adjusting the ribbon tab itself. In my case, I have a wide screen monitor and would really like to be able to see more styles in any of the styles gallery. (Stamps, Callouts, Lines, etc.)

I would both agree as well as disagree here. ;)

The fact that folks say they want to be able to add their own commands seems to indicate they may be unaware of the Quick Access Toolbar, But maybe that's just me.

As for the screen and stretching, I totally agree with that point. It seems awfully silly to see items all bunched up on the left and so much wasted space across the screen.

Cheers... Rick :)

Rick, compared to the potential of greater use (read as flexibility) of the ribbon interface, the Quick Access Toolbar is lame.  It is "a choice" but a lame one. I want Techsmith to unlock the ribbon interface to let us rearrange or add to as others have suggested. For me, it is actually less efficient than it used to be.  Having been in IT since the mid to late 90's, I realize that might increase customer support issues, but I've never needed application support from Techsmith. SnagIT was a better product in my eyes around v10 and has gone down from there, not improved...at least for my needs it hasn't. I've actually back rev'ed to v10 and am actively looking for a replacement product.  Why is it so hard to give the "paying" customers an un-docked and/or customize-able ribbon?

I don't want to discount others and their personal / private / business needs.  For me, I want to be able to use the VAST space of the "Ribbon" to put it to good use!  I think telling people that they can put items in the Quick Access Toolbar is only half of the users needs.  I am surprised that the company is not even considering it or if it's a response from the developers that they are not willing to comply.  I am surprised that there is not any type of API or 3rd party that might be able to come in, like the "Stores" of the cellular phone companies, to have their products tested and vetted before they are approved.  For me, I would like to see some "favorites" some items that I use often in a special area, and or a place, TechSmith designed, where I can place things and "pin" them there.  Often do I multiple things, I outline with a red styles rectangle, then I drag an arrow to it, and then put some text.  This is personal for me, and if I could have these three things "together" it would be easier then clicking on the Quick Access Toolbar and THEN clicking on the ribbon (double click) to get to an arrow (in this case) which could have been done in one click!  I also like the idea of TechSmith suggesting items and patterns for you (you could also opt out of that if you'd like), based on my usage.

I think people are looking for options and customization that are a tad out of the box, however, thought of, hopefully, as such, an enhancement requests.

It's interesting to see the interest in being able to customize the ribbon going on for so long in this thread.  I also would like the capability of using all the wasted space and placing icons where I think they make sense.  Unfortunately, it seems to me this will end up as just wishful thinking in our part but you never know, TS may end up surprising us.  Keep comments coming so they know there's an interest.  One can always hope.

I just don't understand why cant we have a dier box of each section, (Drawing tools, Styles etc)... just add all the items there rather than to click the little arrow, wasting clicks and time.

The other issue is that instead of just ONCE choosing whether I want a shot or video clip, now after each single capture I have to click again if I want a snippet or a video. This is a disgusting waste of time. Both the narrow limited section of tools and adding clicks to each capture (after drawing the cross hair) was probably developed by somebody who just loves to waste time on mouse clicks. Those of us who are used to quick keys, simpler work and focused on getting the job done will really appreciate TECHSMITHs attention to this

It's a pretty easy change to adjust the capture key so it only triggers image capture and you then avoid dealing with the intermediate dialog.

To me, what's nice about the "Big Red Button". It gives you a capture window you can resize before saving. It requires an additional click to save so it really doesn't matter if you click  "Image or Video" at that point.

The easiest thing to do is change the "Print Screen" key to the "Image Profile" in most cases.
I use keyboard shortcuts " Hot Keys" so I rarely use the Big Red Button at all.

Assigning the  "Print Screen Key" to an Image capture is shown in the Image Below, Click to Enlarge.
Setting a keyboard shortcut is the same without following Steps 1 and 2.

I would like to be able to change what the Big Red Button does.
But two keyboard shortcuts handles all my heavy lifting with just one click. I wouldn't have it any other way.

If you want to streamline your workflow, that's my recommendation.

Regards, Joe

I just don't get it.  Why can we not take the features and tools we use every day and place them in one place.  I waste so much time clicking back and forth.  I also would have upgraded but after seeing no real changes - I dumped the trial and went back to 11.  WHAT DOES IT TAKE.  WHO DOESN'T LISTEN TO THEIR CUSTOMERS!

Maybe one of you, my fellow sufferers, can take the time to record a video and post it on youtube and maybe the Snagit gods will take up.  Maybe they don't use it every day!  How could they, it would drive them crazy like it does us!

For me, Snagit is about productivity.  I can take a screenshot using PrintScreen and Paint but I prefer Snagit because it saves me time.

With this new ribbon, I need to click 2-3 times to get to the right tool and the productivity gain is lost.
