HTML Links to Video Chapters

Really need to be able to create HTML links to chapters in a video (from Markers). The Flash table of contents doesn't cut it and we need to re-purpose the video in as many ways as possible. HTML links gives us that flexibility, if only it were an option. Actually surprised this isn't available today.

Hello,
Can you tell us a bit more about what you need to achieve?

You can produce multiple video files at one time based on your marker locations. You could them upload them to your web server and have separate links to each file.

You could also upload them to Screencast.com and they would have separate links.

Maybe with a bit more information we can help come up with a suitable solution.

Would like to generate one video file with chapters marked. Links to chapters could be on the page and/or shared.

While this is partially possible with multiple videos based on markers, it doesn't provide a single video within the view. We've done this in the past with YouTube, but because we're creating original content based on subscription access, we need to host ourselves.

It seems like Camtasia is mostly there. The biggest drawback is that the table of contents is created within a Flash file and the design is extremely limited. We need to be able to have flexibility in the design and distribution... simple HTML links would provide that. We could then create some pretty cool designs in HTML5, as well as apps.

Couldn't the rendering wizard offer an option to generate HTML links from markers?

Thanks!

If you do a custom production of a project with markers, use the classic controller with TOC option set for multiple files from markers [embedded in HTML], the production will have a seperate video file for each marker; each marker's video is directly addressable using a query URL.

If a project has 10 markers, the seperate videos will be numbered 0, 1, 2, etc. by the Production Wizard.

To directly address a specific marker's video, the URL needs to loook like ...

xxxHereIAm.html?movie=3; this will call the 4th marker's video. Please note that "movie" needs to be spelled with a lower case "m".

Here is an example ...

Your example above works great. I did the TOC option in the past with my videos and it worked great then. However now the contents links will not work with winows 7 or 8. What do I have to do differently to get them to work again?

These videos were made quite a while ago with Camtasia vs.4.0.1 They are a wmv with an TOC. I would click on the .htlm file and it would open in Internet Explorer. My customers say they used to work until Windows 7. They worked like the example above at cookbookplus.com. the links(TOC) show ,but they can't click on them to skip to another section of the video.

if your customers say that a CS4 production does not work in Windows 7, then it might be a browser issue?

What browser are they using to view with?

the video segments in the cookbookplus.com example above are MP4s; as I recall, that production was made with CS6 using the classic controller

They are using the Internet Explorer as I am also to view the videos. They also worked for me in Vista, but not in Windows 7 or Windows 8

Win 7 introduced IE 10 or 11 [can't remember for sure]; old video production often have issue with those browsers

Does a different browser work, like Chrome or Firefox?

You may want to consider upgrading the production my making it again in Camtasia Studio 8; the new smart player controller works very well

you should be able to use the original production's WMVs in a new project; then do a custom production to MP4 with controller

Yah,that's what I was thinking this would boil down to. I was hoping I wouldn't have to redo these and could find a work around. No other browsers ever worked - only the Internet Explorer worked. Thanks for your input!

Ok, I made the plunge and got Camtasia 8 - I love it so far. I got a TOC to work in Chrome & FireFox. However it will not work in the Internet Explorer. Message comes up: "Internet Explorer prevented this webpage from running scripts or Active X controls. They have a button to allow active X, but it doesn't work . After I press that button, it comes up with the same message. How do I get Internet Explorer to allow my video. Yes, it is a MP4 with controller

I cannot reproduce the behavior [on Win 7 64 bit, IE 11]

My TOCs work perfectly

pretty sure it's a browser setting issue; check for a tools/options/advanced check box for allow active content to run on this computer?  allow it

does that help?

I'm not a browser expert; maybe someone else could help

or perhaps contact free tech support?

In Chrome & Fire Fox ,the links work. There is no video & no audio, however I can read things on the screen. In Internet Explorer it does jump from one TOC to another (I can tell by where the bottom slider is) However there is only a black screen and I cannot read anything.

this particular video is just a button-style "menu", so there is no video action and no audio; all you will see are hotspot buttons; seeking using the TOC will expose a different button that will link to a subject video

if you see no video frame, then something is definitely wrong with your browser

what version of IE are you using?

this video was produced in CS6 or 7, using the classic controller; the old controller is totally different from the current "smart player" controller, even when using the classic skin

you may need tech support's help here?

here is another example; it is a more traditional video

http://cookbookplus.com/Videos/MCLMOTW-FullAuthorityUsers/MCLMOTW-FullAuthorityUsers_player.html

on larger videos, be sure and allow the entire video to download, otherwise the TOC will not be able to seek properly; once the entire video has downloaded, all should work OK

since the TOCs work in Chrome and Firefox, the IE browser is the issue

Yes that one worked great in the Internet Explorer. How do I make a more traditional video like that? Was is in a lower version of Camtasia? Or were some settings different?

it was made with CS8 last October; it is a standard custom production with markers to create the TOC

it was produced using a custom production, single file MP4 with controller, using the classic theme

again, if your video is a large single video/MP4 file, it needs to completely download before the TOC will work correctly

you can improve on this by producing using multiple files from markers, which will create several smaller video files

when a production will create a large single video file, I'll use a 2 second stop at end/click to continue callout hotspot placed at t=0 in the project, as a "start video" button; the video is produced so as not to pause at start; this causes the video to initially start to play but it stops at 2 seconds [a viewer will think it hasn't started yet], but the video file continues to download; I find that this gives better performance as the file downloads faster

is your video on a web site where you could share a link to it so I could view it?

I just did a simple  sample one to test Camtasia 8 out. I could e-mail it to you. It is 3.4MB in a zip if that works for you.

I received your zip file; your video plays fine if played locally using Chrome or IE 11, or off my web site, using either browser; the TOC works correctly

here is a link to the web site copy ...

http://cookbookplus.com/Temp/TechSmith/BugReport/TOC%20Project%20B/TOC%20Project%20B_player.html

I see that you produced using the Express Show theme; you might try producing again using either the transparent or classic themes; these may behave better in Win 8?

otherwise, I do not know why the TOC does not work for you; if you are viewing the video locally in Win 8, it might be a browser security lock; try produce and share to screencast.com; does that help?

when you play the video, what file do you use to launch it: xxx.html or xxx_player.html; be sure and try using both to see it that makes a difference

if issue persists, contact free tech support ...

Side bar ... possible Windows 8 issue?

I did a little testing; the zipped production you sent me would not extract fully on my Win 7 system; the config_xml.js file [used by the smart player] was blocked; everything else extracted fine; however, I could extract the entire file set, including the config_xml.js on my Vista system

this indicates that Win 8 is marking the config_xml.js as a potentially dangerous file; this is detected by Win 7, but not Vista

this does not happen if the production files were produced on a Win 7 system; the file set could be zipped and completely extracted without issue

try playing your video using the xxx.html file; does the TOC then work correctly

I don't know what all this means, but I think TechSmith should advise here further ...

Thank you, you have done more than enough. Thanks for all your trouble! I will try the above ideas. I agree that that the problems are with the newer Windows security settings. Yes, I have tried the transparent theme - still the same result. Yes, I tried opening with every html file - same result.

Just feedback here:

Got very strange behavior from the Internet Explorer. When I did the link http://cookbookplus.com/Temp/TechSmith/BugReport/TOC%20Project%20B/TOC%20Project%20B_player.html  It just came up with a black screen and the TOC. During this time I would set the security to medium rather than medium-high and the video would show. Then if I came back in with the setting still at medium it only showed the black screen. Then while it was in this state,I would change the security to medium high and it would show the video. So I had to make changes each time to make the video show.

I did upload to screen cast and had the same results with a black screen at first and then showing the video as I changed security settings. Didn't matter what I was changing settings to.

Now for the same video on my computer, I got the xxx.html file to do the same as the above with the black screen at first until I made any changes in the security settings  while it was still up. Then it would show the video. The player.htlm file would not change from the black screen no matter what I did.

thanks for the additional feedback; it definitely sounds like an issue with Win 8 and the config_xml.js file [this file is used by the smart player to drive the video as it plays]

I suggest you contact tech support and log a case; perhaps they can offer solution?
