what version of camtasia are you currently using;

you are trying to open a camproj file, correct?

what version of Camtasia was used to create the camproj?

also ...

open the camproj file with a text editor, like free Notepad++;  look at the 1st 10 lines or so; what "version" is listed?

Camtasia 9.0.3

The project is a .tscproj

I'm assuming the version listed above is the one that was used to create it. I inherited this project from previous employee.

The version that's listed in the text editor says 9.0

can you post a screenshot of the 1st 25 lines, or so; I'd like to look at it?

also, using a copy of the project file, open it with text editor, change version to 8.0; try to open that

any luck [if it opens, you'll get the "upgrade" notice, etc]

I tried changing to version 8 and that didn't work.

I inherited the files on a hard drive. I actually thought maybe not having all the files was part of the issue because I can't be sure, but in the past camtasia would still open when that was the case and you could see what was missing so you could find it.

how do I know if it's camtasia 2018? I can only see the version.

thanks for providing all this info

in your copy of Camtasia, go to help menu, about camtasia; the version is listed there

the format of the project file confirms it is a tscproj; that file type is used by Camtasia 9 and Camtasia 2018

can you zip a copy of the project file, upload it to screencast.com, and provide a link so I can download it?

what we need to try is to identify [in the project file] the names/locations [path] of media referenced in the project; if you can find those on the HD you mention [and is it an external HD ???], maybe you can copy all of the media files to a folder on your C drive, along with the project file; it might then open

I've seen projects not open if media is on a network or external HD

thank you for this latest screenshot of the project file; is this from a copy of the original?

this is definitely a file that was created by Camtasia 9

please change the 12th line so it reads "version" : ""

please change the 10th line so it reads "Name" : ""

save; then try and open this with Camtasia 9; any luck?

any chance you could put a full copy of the original project file on Screencast.com, so I can download and inspect?

you should zip up the file then upload to screencast.com

I was also able to convert/open in Camtasia 2018 without changes

I then converted that Camtasia 2018 project back into Camtasia 9 by making the changes shown here; it too opened in 9 OK ...

{
  "title" : "",
  "description" : "",
  "author" : "",
  "width" : 1920.0,
  "height" : 1080.0,
  "version" : "0.5",
  "editRate" : 30,
  "authoringClientName" :  {
    "name" : "",
    "platform" : "Windows",
    "version" : ""
  },

I made the suggested changes; download this zip, extract the C9 project file; see if it opens in Camtasia 9

as best I recall, Camtasia 9 project file text headers changed several times as newer versions were released, 9.1.4. being the last

another thing you might try is to change  the line "version" : "0.5" to "version" : "1.0"; if that doesn't work,  then maybe to "version" : "1.5"

do you know exactly what version of Camtasia 9 created the original file?

1.0 worked OK when opening with 9.1.2. [my installed version]

forget using 1.5, doesn't work

I'm thinking that it's the version on Camtasia 9 you have installed [9.0.3.]

best bet would be to upgrade to 9.1.4. [it's free]

the project file references 6 trec files, located on your C drive; it also references several music files in the Camtasia Library

all these files go missing after the project opens for me [again, as expected]

can you locate/zip the 6 trec files and upload for me?  their location paths are in the project file
