I used to like this program.

I used to like this program. You broke everything for workflow - and you made all the screens HUGE. What's with the wasted space? I'm afraid I'm moving on to something a bit simpler.

I have used this program extensively since the first version.   The improvements they have made through the years have been great and most welcomed,  however, this latest 2018 release has some shortfalls which I understand can happen however is the managements smugness and attitude towards constructive comments and opinions of features that have been modified or removed that concerns me as a customer.  They rely on the votes in this forum to make executive final decisions, however, fail to recognize that only a small percentage of users are aware of the forums and could care less about them as they like me want to work and not debate issues however I have taken the time to voice this opinion as the program is important to me.  I use the program to communicate graphically through screen captures modifications changes and other information in the planning, design and the construction process.   I will continue to use it personally as I am hopeful they (Tech-Smith)  will see the light, however, I  have stopped glorious reviews to  colleagues due to the reasons cited above systemic to the attitude of the management team at Snag-It as I am concerned they are losing the edge on  what I have touted as superior customer support and willingness to work with you.   I see that fading away.

I have found a replacement program that replaced snag it notes.  "Notezilla"   and understand they may be working on a program similar to Snag-It we'll see.

I do want to note that the support team is very good at Snag-it and these comments are related the managment team with reargd to what is and is not included and more transparent and friendly reaction to the numerous customers making inquiries.

bill - I understand.  I think they've lost the fact that the original and likely most used parts of the program were simple, fast and quite easy to use.  I for instance use it as a quick capture to jpg  and send a quick note or paste into whatever program I'm using at the time (also usually as a simple jpg).  The fewer the clicks the better - speed is always the name of the game.  For someone who marks up (I used for this occasionally) it was always quick and easy as well.  Now it takes many more clicks to achieve with too many options that really aren't needed for most users.  If they offered a customization or 'advanced' option button - this would certainly be welcomed.  Also the size of the interface is absurdly big when in this day and age - we're fighting with screen space for viewing multiple programs on mostly multiple screens (except when travelling on laptops - where it's really much worse)  Giant red buttons and huge boxes with no 'compact' viewing options.  Makes me wonder what they were thinking.  Perhaps they will rethink things - if they are as responsive as you think - (Hope so).  There is a lot of competition out there for the space and it is a capable program.  No one wants to learn a new program every time a new release is out.  The new 'agile' style of updating makes every day a learning day.  Most of us just want to get to work and use the tools - without having to update/comment/be sold to/relearn a new way - every day we go to open our tools up to use them. It's frustrating and exhausting

Billing - Gizmo's is a rating site that rated freeware and has slid towards the mists but is still a fairly good source
You guys want what is one of the best renamers> Rename Master if Free, portable and you can do almost anything including saving scripts for complex setups you use often and command line usage. I get some graphics that always have the extension .HTM. I run a batch file to renumber them and change the .HTM to .JPG  with one click. It han do deep and complex things such as swapping positions etc
He also makes Arsclip the clipboard manager from hell

Just a comment about the "giant" things we now often see. It makes me wonder if there is perhaps a disconnect that occurs where the development team as well as some testers has access to the latest and greatest hardware with insane high density resolutions. And what they are designing looks just fine on their setups, but for the majority of users that may be on older hardware and smaller resolutions, things look incredibly large.

I know that when I capture a screen shot and post it, it seems to be presented much larger once it arrives here than it did on my screen at the time of editing and capturing. Not that I'm on a super high res screen, but I've noticed a difference.

Just wondering if that may account for some of the oddness.

Cheers... Rick :)

Hi David

While I'm sure it helps to vent frustrations by agreeing with other posts, I'm wondering if what would be more helpful to TechSmith would be to create one or more posts of your own where you fully articulate to the SnagIt team what your specific pain points are.

Describe exactly how a specific process has caused you grief by the change. For example, you might say something like this: in version (13, 12 or other version here) I could just click (item here) to accomplish this or that. But in 2018, I have all these additional steps I have to take to do the same thing. (and list the steps that are more involved)

My own thought is that unless folks are able to articulate exactly where they are experiencing issues, it's wide open to interpretation to say things like "hoping we get back ease of use". I'm sure the devs feel it's already easy to use. But if they see the contrast...

I would encourage others to follow suit.

Cheers... Rick :)

I remember when 12 came out I was aghast at the almost total destruction of one of my favorite tools was made into a mess  and the workflow I HAD BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO WITHIN THAT PROGRAM had be changed to something much clunkier and difficult to use
While the Techsmith position that we make individual posts is on the face a good idea, that also makes the things they do not want to hear easier to ignore
So occasionally some general bitching  besides being good for the soul, it may almost get some attention

Just start googling. I am not going to make suggestions in their (techsmith's) forum. Most of the others fall down in the editing and the ability to add outside graphics. etc. Even Window has a built in capture utility these days and if you use a graphics editor you can easily take screen shots and paste them into Photoshop/Affinity/Chasy etc and add callouts and arrow but it is a bitch compared to the Snagit editor.

A lot of us know where your question is coming from. Right now, Snagit is probably still the best tool at the upgrade prices despite the breaks and regressions

Agreed, for basic annotation you can work pretty fast in SnagIt.
90+% of the effects I've never had any  use for. Border is the only one I use regularly.

For  polished work,  a more sophisticated program like Photoshop is faster.  It's also highly dependent on your skill level. Knowing which tool to use, when and why in any given situations is also critical.I've been using PS for several years. Still learning new tricks & techniques all the time.

Complex edit's involving multiple screen shots. One's that I carve up and blend into one image.Go through PS.

If I'm going to add a lot of annotations,  I'll throw it back to SnagIt.
Here's what I don't get???????????SnagIt 12 seems to work well on my machine running Windows 10. Let's forget about version 11 and previous versions, there getting pretty old and developing issues on Windows 10.
12 works basically like the old SnagIt everyone seems to miss, for whatever reason.
So you can always use SnagIt 12 if you wanted to.

I liked SnagIt 12. However, if your not careful and click to close to another annotation, the tool changes  to the annotation you just clicked to close to.There's a lot to like, like the on canvas pop up/callout menu. However, there's other quirky behavior as well.

Anyway, was never a power user a SnagIt. If I cranked out 50 or a 100+ images a day I might loath the newer SnagIt as much as some people seem to do.
For myself, I use SnagIt primarily for capture. Photoshop does my heavy lifting and SnagIt handles everything else. Which is quite a bit actually.
For what it's worth, Joe
